Chapter 113
"Are you heading to a meeting?" Yesenia asked, oblivious to anyone else.
Clifford grunted in affirmation. The conference room was just two floors down. When the elevator doors opened, he stepped out without a backward glance.
The moment he was gone, Yesenia's cheerful expression vanished. Her face hardened, and she remained silent until the elevator reached the second basement level. Once they were in an area with no security cameras, she turned to Latisha.
Struggling with the heavy box, Latisha couldn't see the path ahead clearly. Yesenia smirked and suddenly stuck out her foot.
Latisha tripped, lost her balance, and went tumbling forward. The box flew from her hands, its contents scattering across the floor. She landed hard, a searing pain shooting through her wrists and knees.
"Oh my, you're so clumsy! How do you manage to fall just walking?" Yesenia exclaimed with feigned surprise. "You've ruined all my things."
Latisha pressed her lips together, her face smudged with dust from the concrete floor. She took several deep breaths, trying to calm herself before pushing herself up. She looked up at Yesenia, her eyes burning.
Yesenia raised an eyebrow, her expression openly mocking. "What are you looking at me for? Aren't you going to pick up my things?"
Latisha's fists clenched at her sides as she stared at Yesenia. The scene was eerily familiar, reminding her of the first time they had met. Someone had bumped into her, scattering her belongings, and Yesenia had knelt down to help, offering to be her friend. How naive she had been then, to believe that someone would genuinely want to befriend her.
Seeing that Latisha wasn't moving, Yesenia's smile faded. "Your mouth may be mute, but are your ears deaf too? I told you to pick up my things."
Latisha ignored her and turned to leave.
Yesenia grabbed her arm. "Stop right there! Who said you could leave?"
Latisha struggled, but Yesenia's grip was firm. She twisted around and glared at her.
It all started that day when Nikita had slapped Yesenia. Since then her entire life had been turned upside down because of this woman. She had lost her job her friend, and now, Mrs. Dashiell was gone too.
As these thoughts flooded her mind, an intense wave of hatred for Yesenia washed over her. Fueled by a strength she didn't know she possessed, she shoved Yesenia with all her might.
Caught off guard and teetering on her high heels, Yesenia stumbled backward and fell. "Ah-!"
Her nails dug into Latisha's arm, and as she went down, she dragged Latisha with her. They both crashed to the ground. This time, there was no box to cushion the fall, and Latisha took the full impact.
Her vision swam with black spots, the force of the fall knocking the air from her lungs. A sharp, violent pain erupted in her lower abdomen.
Yesenia's injured ankle buckled under her, and she couldn't get up.
"You dead-eyed mute..." she hissed, clutching her ankle, tears of pain streaming down her face. "You are so dead!"
Latisha gritted her teeth against the pain in her own stomach, cold sweat beading on her forehead. She couldn't stand either.
Yesenia pulled out her phone and called Clifford, sobbing hysterically as she gave him a twisted version of
the story That mutes. She pushed
me! My ankle wasn't even fully heated, and now it's definitely broken..."
Unable to speak, Latisha could only listen as Yesenia painted her as the villain.
Less than five minutes later, Clifford arrived. He took in the scene-the scattered
items, the two women on the floor—and immediately went to Yesenia, kneeling to help her up. "What happened?”
Yesenia collapsed into his arms,
weeping. "Ask her! All she had to do
was move a box! What was she so angry about? I said a few words to her
after she threw my hings, and she attacked me. If you're going to protect her, then I guess I just have to suck it up!"
