Chapter 189:

“Dax?” I called again, this time louder, but I was met with no response.

I tilted my head and saw Dax lying on the couch with a book in his hand.

Dax could sleep anywhere. The noise from the book was enough to wake him, but for some reason, he remained asleep.

The longer I stared at the moon, the more I felt connected to it.

It was like the Moon Goddess was trying to tell me something about my life and my brother’s life. Each time I got lost in thought, I had this feeling that I wasn’t meant to be where I was.

The tattoo on my back and the strange thoughts only convinced me more that I was royalty.

But how did I end up here? In the woods, by the river?

Trying to explain it to Dax didn’t help matters—he always found a way to laugh it off and make a joke of it. It was annoying, but I knew Dax was playful. He didn’t take things seriously.

Wallowing in confusion, I couldn’t help but think if we had a mate, parents, or other siblings.

I tried to string together my weird dreams, but every time I did, I ended up with a migraine. But it wasn’t enough to make me stop.

I felt a push deep in my spirit about my life. I needed to know my past.

I needed to understand why I felt like I was royalty.

I needed to know why I always searched for my crown. Why did I feel like I should be leading a large group of people? Why did I feel like I was missing someone in my life—maybe a brother or a sister? Perhaps a companion or a partner.

I felt as if a disaster had struck in my past life.

Was I reborn?

I needed answers to the endless questions that consumed me. I had to know my identity.

Every night, I went to bed with that heavy burden in my heart. It was the last thought I had before falling asleep and the first thing I thought of when I woke up.

I wished I knew the answers.

But tonight—of all nights—felt different.

I felt a kind of energy surrounding me, screaming positivity.

Tonight felt so good, I wished it could be replayed over and over. But it didn’t take long before sleep clouded my eyes. I didn’t want to give in to sleep; I feared my demons. The moment I shut my eyes, they would attack, charging at me in thousands, consuming me and filling me with terror.

Most nights, I woke up screaming and sweating.

Thanks to those faceless bastards.

Despite mustering courage in my dreams, they still dealt with me.

They were dark, shapeless entities that hovered around, haunting me.

But amidst my demons, I sometimes glimpsed fragments of my past.

Though it didn’t make sense.
