Chapter 243:

I didn’t want to be discarded like a forgotten plaything.

Not again.

I wouldn’t survive it if Dax and Devin left me.

They were already a part of me—an inseparable piece of my soul.

I had grown too fond of them, too attached.

Now, the mere idea of losing them felt unbearable.

If they left, the cottage would become my prison, a lonely place where I would wither in solitude.

And if fate turned cruel and rogue hunters found me…

I wouldn’t stand a chance.

Maybe—just maybe—Devin and Dax would plead with Damon to let me stay close to the castle.

Since he didn’t—

I wanted to keep the brothers to myself and enjoy the rest of my life with them, but at the same time, I didn’t want to appear selfish. I didn’t want them to miss out on an important part of their lives. Part of me was glad I told them their true identity, while another part couldn’t stop brooding over the consequences.

Droplets of tears streamed down my face as I hugged the pillow closer. They hadn’t left, but I already felt a sense of sadness and loneliness creeping in. Soon, I knew I would be miserable. I couldn’t fathom life without them. They completed me in a way I couldn’t fully understand. It felt like an invisible force had drawn us together.

If only they weren’t Damon’s twins. But I didn’t need a soothsayer to confirm it—their striking resemblance to him was undeniable. Everything about them screamed Damon. I didn’t know how long I had buried my face in the pillow, crying, until I heard a knock at my door.

I quickly sat up, wiping the tears from my eyes with the back of my hand. I didn’t want them to see me so devastated.

“Hold on!” I called out, jumping out of bed in a rush. I dashed into the bathroom, splashing water on my face. When I finished, I wiped my face with a towel and looked at my reflection in the mirror. My sad, silver eyes stared back at me, droopy and heavy with emotion—thanks to Dax and Devin.

I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself, and composed myself before opening the door.

“Hi,” I greeted, my voice trembling slightly, as I looked at them, confused and unable to mask my emotions. I could no longer hide my jealousy and sadness. My heart ached from their absence, and the frustration made me want to curse the Moon Goddess herself.

Why does she make my happiness so fleeting? Why was my life a constant rollercoaster of disappointments?

“Are you alright?” Devin asked, tilting his head slightly, his gaze intense as if he were trying to read me.

I looked away, focusing my eyes on my fingers resting in my lap, absentmindedly playing with them. I didn’t want him to see the redness in my eyes.

“Have you been crying?” he asked, his voice filled with concern and surprise.
