Chapter 309:

Squinting my eyes, I saw a boy, no older than 3 years. He had a striking resemblance to the strange woman—and… the triplets.

His hair was messy, and his eyes were full of happiness and life. I was tempted to cup his chubby cheeks, but I refrained.

“Mama, up,” he tilted his head toward the woman, stretching his arms upward.

The scene was so adorable that I found myself blushing. But before a smile could form on my face, images of my protruding belly flooded my mind, stealing the smile away.

If only I hadn’t miscarried.

“Why so sad?” the boy asked, his eyes sparkling with curiosity as he adjusted himself in his mother’s arms.

“I’m not sad,” I replied, blinking back the tears that threatened to spill down my cheeks.

I wasn’t ready for the toddler’s series of questions.

“Don’t lie. Mama said it’s not good to tell lies, right?” He turned his head, fixing his gaze on his mother, waiting for confirmation.

“Right, Mama?” he repeated, and his mother nodded, planting a gentle kiss on his cheek.

“It’s bad to tell lies,” she affirmed, holding him tighter in her arms.

I longed to do the same with my baby, but he was gone. I watched him struggle to climb down from his mother’s arms before running toward me.

I almost laughed at the way he panted after the short sprint. His legs were small but sturdy enough to carry him without falling.

Before I could process what was happening, he wrapped me in a bear hug. His short, chubby hands couldn’t quite reach around me, but he held on tight.

He squeezed my neck, clasping his tiny fingers behind it, and planted a kiss on my forehead.

“It’s okay, honey, everything will be fine,” he encouraged me. I felt his small hands tap my back rhythmically as he comforted me.

I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore. I let them pour, clinging to him as he continued to rock me gently.

Slowly, I pulled away from him, offering a smile.

“I feel better now,” I said, nodding my head as I cupped his chubby cheeks in my palms, savoring the softness of his flawless skin.

“It’s fine, Aurora,” the woman said, sitting beside me. It didn’t take long before her short black dress got soaked in the river. I was about to respond to her when something clicked in my mind.

Her words replayed in my head, and curiosity struck me. How did she know my name?

“We’ve been watching you try to throw the rock to the other side of the river, but you keep failing,” she replied, interrupting my thoughts.

My jaw dropped in astonishment as I shot her a confused look. “It’s easy. Let me show you.”

She picked up a rock from the ground and tossed it across the river.

I gasped in surprise as I watched the rock bounce three times on the water before landing on the other side.

“That was amazing!” I exclaimed, a wide smile spreading across my face.
