Chapter 74:

I never wanted any of this to happen. The last thing on my mind was getting into trouble over the King’s attention. I wasn’t that desperate.

“I asked her, not you,” she snapped, her voice laced with anger.

I nearly tripped under the intensity of her glare.

“Who are you? What are you doing here? What is your name?” she bombarded me with questions, demanding an answer all at once.

Fear gripped me, shaking me so hard I nearly forgot what she had asked.

Reluctantly, I raised my head, struggling to find the words.

“My…” My voice trembled, refusing to cooperate.

“Can’t you talk? Has the cat got your tongue?!” she barked, her hateful eyes flashing at me.

“And next time, when I speak to you, your eyes should be pinned to the floor. Understand?”

“Yes, ma’am,” I murmured, immediately lowering my gaze to my feet.

I had no desire to cross this woman. Her anger radiated from her like a raging volcano, thick and suffocating.

Relief flooded me when she finally turned on her heel and walked away, muttering something under her breath.

Her legs wobbled slightly with each step.

She had been thoroughly used.

“Go in,” the guard’s voice snapped me back to reality.

My stomach twisted as the massive double doors swung open, revealing the most breathtaking room I had ever seen.

In any other situation, stepping into such luxury would have been a dream.

But not today.

Not this time.

My legs threatened to give out as I inched forward, feeling the weight of the King’s gaze.

I froze in terror when the doors shut behind me with a deafening bang.

Panic surged through me, beads of sweat forming on my forehead as the realization sank in—I was alone with King Damon.

And I had no idea what he planned to do with me.

My fear multiplied tenfold as he rose from the couch, leaning lazily against a nearby table.

A dark smirk tugged at his lips.

I blinked rapidly, forcing my blurry vision to clear.

I needed to see everything.

I couldn’t afford to make a mistake.
