Chapter 907
Leonie clutched the basket of flowers, almost wanting to laugh. Connor was entirely clueless when it came to romance, but the fact that he was actually attempting to comfort her was enough to make her forgive him just this once.
Comforting herself with that thought, her feet naturally followed Connor as she climbed into the car.
She slid into the passenger seat, and Connor slammed his foot on the gas, the engine roaring to life.
The cool evening breeze whipped through the open windows, catching Leonie's long hair and sending it dancing around her face in a way that looked effortlessly stunning.
Connor caught a glimpse of her out of the corner of his eye. His heart practically stopped, a sudden, unfamiliar warmth flooding his chest, leaving him completely dazed.
Leonie, however, was much more composed. Seeing that Connor was barrelling straight toward a red light without slowing down, she panicked.
"Red light!"
Connor snapped back to reality and slammed on the brakes. The sudden deceleration threw them both forward against their seatbelts.
Leonie stared at him, her heart pounding.
"What is wrong with you? Are you daydreaming about a breakup?"
Leonie snapped. If she hadn't yelled, he would have blown right through the intersection and probably wrecked the car.
Connor obviously wasn't going to admit he had been staring at her.
Instead, he deflected with a dry joke. "Yeah, I am. But my ex is sitting right next to me."
That sentence left Leonie with a complicated mix of emotions.
On one hand, she was glad he was finally paying attention to her and seemingly admitting his feelings. On the other hand, the guy was a complete idiot.
Given his volatile moods, who knew what he would do next? But compared to how he used to treat her, this was a massive improvement.
Deciding it wasn't worth the argument, she stayed quiet. The light turned green, and Connor hit the gas. By the time they arrived at the canyon road, the sky was painted with a breathtaking, vibrant sunset.
Aside from Connor's red sports car, seven or eight other heavily modified vehicles were lined up along the asphalt.
At a glance, Leonie could tell every single vehicle was worth millions of dollars. It reminded her of Hawthorne's private garage.
In his younger days, Hawthorne had been obsessed with cars. As he got older, he transitioned to sleek, understated luxury sedans, leaving his wilder imports to gather dust.
Leonie had once wanted to take one for a spin, but Hawthorne had strictly forbidden it, warning her that the modified engines were far too dangerous for an amateur.
But Hawthorne had been generous enough to gift Gwyneth a Ferrari, keeping his most aggressive supercars hidden away.
Leonie remembered that Gwyneth was also a fan of racing. She wondered if she could ever convince her aunt to sneak a few of Hawthorne's cars out for a joyride.
The mere thought of it was exhilarating. It was a shame Gwyneth was pregnant and had to sit out on the fun.
"Are you guys really racing out here?"
Connor glanced at her.
"Why else would I bring you here? Do you remember the first time we met, when Gwyneth practically ran me over? I noticed you loved the adrenaline. Tonight, you get to experience it firsthand. I have a rally race next month, too. You should come cheer for me."
Leonie turned her face away, feigning indifference.
"I'm sure you have plenty of girls lining up to cheer for you. Why do you need me?"
Connor, entirely clueless about the intricate emotional mazes of women, didn't dare lose his temper. Instead, he forced his voice into a softer, more pleading tone.
"Since when do I have a bunch of girls around me? Don't make things up. You're the only woman in my life right now."
Connor was terrified she would misinterpret his past feelings for Gwyneth, so he quickly added, "And Gwyneth doesn't count. That was just a stupid childhood crush. It meant nothing."
Leonie always had a talent for pouring ice water over Connor's dramatic declarations. She burst out laughing.
"You don't need to explain your feelings for Gwyneth. Even if you were madly in love with her, she's my family now."
He swallowed his frustration. Thinking about it infuriated him—if he had fought harder back then, Gwyneth could have been his.
But looking at Leonie's beautiful, innocent face, Connor knew he didn't regret how things had played out. He still couldn't entirely articulate what Gwyneth had meant to him.
Right now, the only thing he knew for certain was that Leonie controlled his every mood. Seeing her with Dorian had driven him to the brink of insanity.
He wouldn't be able to sleep until he physically dragged Leonie away from that guy. After getting whipped by his uncle, Marcus, Connor had finally dearned his lesson. He would. never dare disrespect his uncle again.
He didn't dare hold onto any lingering thoughts of Gwyneth. All his energy was now
completely laser-focused on winning Leonie over.
If his stubborn uncle, Marcus, really planned to stay single for the rest of his life,
then so be it.
The lineup of high-performance cars looked incredibly intimidating. Almost every driver had a gorgeous girl sitting in the passenger seat. At the front of the pack, a referee stood with a ffag, preparing to start the countdown.
