Chapter 340

As Lucie spoke, she waved her bodyguards over. After getting burned a few times before, she wasn't taking any chances with her safety. These days, she never left home without at least eight bodyguards. The eight of them—tall and built like walls -stepped forward, blocking the two maids in an instant.

“Ms. Anderson, you really can't take Cody! Somebody help!" The maids were in a panic.

Since Cody was staying at the hospital, which was relatively secure, he only had four bodyguards assigned to him. The rest of the people around were maids and caregivers.

"Stay where you are," Lucie ordered, holding Cody close as her bodyguards surrounded them. She didn't slow down as she headed straight for the hospital's main entrance.

The Heath family's maids tried to follow, stomping their feet in helpless frustration, but Lucie's guards kept them back. They didn't stand a chance of getting through.

Cody wrapped his arms tightly around Lucie's neck, excitement all over his face. "Mommy, are we really going to the children's hospital? Do they have cartoons there? And after the check-up, can I go home?"

Lucie didn't answer. She just walked faster, her jaw set, sunlight carving a sharp, cold line across her face. All she could think about was Steven's lying face. If it turned out Cody wasn't really sick, she would never forgive him.

"Be careful, Ms. Anderson," someone called out.

Lucie cut across the garden and through the lobby, making a beeline for the door. But just as she reached the revolving door, she walked straight into a solid chest.

The maids following her pulled up short when they saw who it was. Their faces went pale. “Mr. Heath... Mr. Heath, Ms. Anderson wants to take Cody to the children's hospital-we couldn't stop her."

Steven frowned, towering over Lucie and blocking her way. "Lucie, where are you taking Cody?"

Lucie met his eyes dark and impossible to read. He looked cold, dressed in black and camel, every inch the man in control. "Steven, move."

"Daddy!" Cody slipped out of Lucie's arms and ran to Steven, but then darted back to grab Lucie's hand. "Daddy, Mommy's taking me for a check-up! She said if I'm better, I can go home!"

Steven shot a look at the maids, his voice low and dangerous. "Take Cody back to his room. Now."

"Oh yes, sir." The maids moved, but Lucie stepped in front of Cody, protective. "Steven, does Cody really have leukemia?" she demanded.

Steven didn't blink. "Lucie, do you really think I'd joke about our son's life?"

She let out a cold laugh. "Keep lying, Steven." She bent down, scooping Cody into her arms. “I'm taking him to the children's hospital for tests. We'll see if he has leukemia or not."

Steven blocked her again. "You've seen all the diagnosis reports. What more do you want?"

Lucie's eyes were icy. "I think you're lying. I'm getting Cody checked at another hospital. If he really does have leukemia, I'll keep my promise and have this baby to save him. But if he doesn't, there's no way m keeping this child for you." .net

Steven's jaw tightened, disappointment and frustration flickering across his face. "Lucie, do you have to be this heartless? Don't forget, the baby you're carrying is your own child. That's a life."

Lucie just stared back, more certain than ever that he was lying. "Stop wasting my time. If you won't let me take him, that just proves you're hiding something.”

Steven's face darkened, his throat working as he tried to find the right words. She wasn't easy to fool anymore-not after everything he'd put her through. "Do you really have to do this?"

"Yes. We're getting those tests today." Lucie tried to sidestep him. "The truth will come out. If you have nothing to hide, then get out of my way."

Steven sighed, frustration leaking into his voice. "Lucie, don't make a scene. I'm not lying to you. Please don't put Cody through this. He's not strong enough for all this stress. If you want tests, bring in the best- specialists here, alright?" .net

But Cody shook his head hard in Lucie's arms. "I want to go to the children's

hospital with Mommy! Daddy, you're lying. I'm not sick!"

"Cody!" Steven's tone snapped, sharp and stern.

Cody flinched but clung even tighter to Lucie's neck. “I'm telling the truth!"

Lucie felt her heart go cold. She saw the panic flash in Steven's eyes, heard the honesty in Cody's voice. It all clicked into place. That lying bastard-he was doing it again.

"Move," she said, her voice flat and cold, pushing forward with Cody in her arms.

Steven's bodyguards started to

move, but he stopped them with a wave. "Fine. Go if you want. But I can't stand being accused of something I didn't do. If you go to the children's hospital and they confirm Cody does have leukémia, how are you going to make it up to me? How about you spend the night with me?"

Lucie nearly exploded. "Steven, you are seriously messed up!"
