Empire 11

The Paper Wife's Empire · NovelDrama.Org

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

Ramona had barely taken a few steps when a man stepped out of the car and opened the back door for her.

She recognized him immediately-it was the same man who had handed her the business card last time. Today, though, he wasn’t in uniform. Instead, he wore a simple black suit and dark sunglasses, which made him look much more approachable.

Ramona smiled politely and slid into the back seat.

It was clear he was here just for her; they were the only two in the car.

“Excuse me, you are…?”

“I’m Mr. Jordon’s personal assistant. You can call me Ash.”

Ash seemed to know exactly what she was about to ask as soon as she spoke.

“Ash, why did your boss choose me for this arrangement? I don’t think we’ve ever met, have we?”

She was careful, testing the waters.

Ash offered a small smile. “I’m not privy to Mr. Jordon’s personal affairs. But he only recently returned to the country, so I doubt he’s met you before, Ms. Jarrett.”

“Then…” Ramona hesitated, curiosity getting the better of her. “What does your boss look like?”

He’d been so mysterious, refusing to show himself. Could he be…not much to look at?

It was just an arrangement, sure, but if he was truly unattractive, she wanted to be prepared.

Ash couldn’t help chuckling at her question. He’d worked with Ethan for

years and never once had a woman worried about Ethan’s looks.

But he quickly composed himself. “I’m probably not the right person to comment. You’ll see for yourself soon enough, Ms. Jarrett.”

Ramona sighed inwardly. That probably meant he was plain at best. She lowered her expectations.

Soon, the car pulled up in front of a gorgeous townhouse on the city’s edge. Though technically in the downtown area, it was tucked away and offered plenty of privacy.

Ash explained that this was an exclusive, members-only restaurant-and tonight, Ethan had reserved the entire place.

Ramona followed a server inside, Ash and the bodyguards remaining discreetly at the entrance. A quiet attendant led her to a private dining

room.

“Mr. Jordon?” she called softly.

The crystal chandelier bathed the room in a soft, opulent glow, lighting up a tall, imposing figure by the window.

She hesitated, then called again, and finally saw his face-a striking, almost intimidating visage. His features were sharp: deep-set brows, a straight nose, and perfectly sculpted lips.

Ramona stared for several seconds before his cool, low voice snapped her back to reality. “Yes, that’s me. Please, have a seat, Ms. Jarrett.”

“Uh…sure. Thank you.”

She quickly averted her gaze, suddenly forgetting all about making a good impression.

Wasn’t he supposed to be plain-looking?

“What’s wrong? Do I look that bad?” Ethan asked, catching her reaction.

His presence was overwhelming, almost stifling.

Ramona shook her head quickly. “No, not at all. You’re…actually very handsome. Exceptionally so.”

Honestly, he was the most attractive man she’d ever seen, hands down.

Jotham, the campus heartthrob, was movie-star handsome by any standard, and Ramona had admired him for years. She knew good looks

when she saw them.

But this Ethan… he was on another level entirely. His features were so perfectly balanced, so striking, it was almost unreal.

“Thank you,” Ethan replied, nodding politely. “You look beautiful as well, Ms. Jarrett. That dress suits you.”

“I appreciate the gift you sent,” Ramona said with a smile, meeting his gaze. Ethan was nothing like she’d expected—he seemed far less difficult

to talk to.

“It was nothing, just a small gesture. If you liked it, I’ll send more in the future,” Ethan said, his tone courteous and pleasant.

He was polite, but there was still a certain distance in the air-a subtle chill that kept her on her toes.

After a few more polite exchanges, Ethan indicated it was time to start

dinner.

The meal was served course by course, each dish artfully plated, small in portion but bursting with layers of flavor. Everything tasted exquisite.

But for Ramona, the tiny bites felt more like a tasting menu than a real meal. She found herself hungrier than she cared to admit.

Throughout the long dinner, Ethan said almost nothing, simply meeting her gaze in silence. They barely knew each other, after all, so even the best meal couldn’t erase the awkwardness.

Remembering what Fenton had said about Ethan’s high standards, Ramona didn’t dare break the silence either.

It wasn’t until dessert arrived that Ethan finally spoke again. “Do you like the food here?”

“It’s really good,” Ramona replied, popping a bite of dessert into her mouth-then immediately paused, worried she sounded unsophisticated. Her ears grew warm. She tried again, “You have excellent taste, Mr. Jordon. The dishes are all so unique, and the flavors are very… layered.”

Ethan lowered his head, his expression unreadable.

Did he think her answer was too amateur?

Ramona wasn’t a food critic, and she rarely dined in places like this. Her vocabulary had its limits.

“If you’re not a fan, we can try somewhere else next time. You can choose, Ms. Jarrett.”

“No, really, I liked it…” Ramona insisted, quickly waving her hands. But when she met his searching gaze, she added, “The food is wonderful, I mean it. I just don’t usually come to restaurants this fancy. And, well, it’s my first time meeting you, so I’m a little nervous.”

“Maybe if we met somewhere more relaxed next time, we could talk more easily,” she admitted.

After all, this was just a marriage arrangement, not a real romance, her comfort mattered most.

“All right,” Ethan agreed, lips pressed in his usual unreadable line.

“It’s just that I’m not much of a talker,” he said matter-of-factly. “I never know what to say.”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose. ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ find⦿novel.net

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
