Empire 128
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Brianna’s gentle retort instantly threw Jotham into a panic.
“What nonsense are you talking about?” he snapped, pushing Brianna away as his brows knitted in frustration. “You’re my wife. Whatever’s between Ramona and me is nothing more than a matter of convenience. You know that better than anyone. Everything I’m doing now is to protect us.”
“is that so?” Brianna smiled, but her eyes shimmered with unshed tears, gazing up at him with a look that tugged at the heart.
Jotham cupped her cheek, his voice softening. “Promise me you’ll stop this. Just keep your head down, stay safe, and wait for me. My promise to you hasn’t changed since ten years ago: I’ll grow old with you, and only you.”
His words faded to a whisper by the end.
A decade ago, when he’d first met Brianna, he’d made her that vow–to stay by her side for life. But now, even as he repeated it, his certainty felt thin, the conviction of his younger self slipping away.
Brianna didn’t reply. She leaned quietly into his arms, staying there until it was nearly time for her flight. Under Jotham’s watchful gaze, she finally turned and headed through security.
Once certain she was gone, Jotham hurried out of the airport.
But no sooner had he left than Brianna reappeared in the main hall, now dressed in understated clothes, a baseball cap pulled low and a mask covering her face. Without a backward glance, she slipped outside and hailed a cab.
Early the next morning, Jotham arrived at the Holt family’s old estate. He’d gotten Brianna out of town overnight, barely sleeping before rushing back.
Winnie, who’d been looking after Liliane these past days, hadn’t had much rest either. After hearing about Brianna last night, she’d barely managed to close her eyes. She’d always known–so long as Brianna was around, nothing good would come to the Holts.
Ramona was no saint herself, but at least she was the family’s daughter–in–law. Brianna’s attempts to tarnish Ramona’s name only dragged down the family’s reputation and Jotham’s, too.
Winnie had called Jotham repeatedly the night before, but he hadn’t answered. When he finally showed up at the house this morning, she’d guessed he’d already met with “that woman.”
Her face was stony as she led him into the sitting room.
“What exactly are you going to do about Brianna?” Winnie demanded without preamble.
“I’ve already sent her away. As for the mess online, I’ll hire a lawyer for her and settle any compensation.”
“That’s criminal! Are you trying to drag the Holt family down with her by covering up for her?”
Winnie’s anger overflowed; she could hardly believe Jotham was still defending Brianna. Her voice rose, nearly a shout. “After everything she’s done, don’t you see who she really is?”

“Mom, given how far things have gone, we can’t pretend we’re not partly responsible. If you and Dad hadn’t pushed her, if you hadn’t threatened her with Milo, she wouldn’t have-”
Before he could finish, Winnie slapped him hard across the face, her cheeks flushed with fury.
“So you really want to cut ties with this family? If that’s what you want, go find her right now!”
“Why all the shouting so early in the morning?”
A frail voice sounded from the doorway.
Supported by a housekeeper, Liliane slowly entered the room and settled herself into the place of honor on the sofa, not sparing Jotham or Winnie a glance.
Though her expression was shadowed, Liliane was far calmer than Winnie.
“Grandma.” Jotham immediately bowed his head in greeting.
Liliane finally looked at him. “You sent Brianna away?”
She’d already caught the tail end of their conversation on her way in.
Brianna lashing out in desperation didn’t surprise her. The woman had tried to play dirty and wound up making a fool of herself. As long as Jotham severed ties, the Holt family would remain unscathed.
But the real trouble now was with Ramona. Brianna’s latest move had clearly been for Jotham’s sake, and Ramona was sharp. She was bound to be suspicious.
Jotham nodded. Before he could say more, Liliane pressed on, “How do you plan to explain all this to
Ramona?”
“I haven’t figured that out yet,” Jotham admitted.
“What’s there to explain?” Winnie huffed. “If Ramona hadn’t gotten restless first, that woman wouldn’t have had a chance. Even if that article wasn’t all true, there’s no smoke without fire. Ramona’s landed so many big deals over the years. Don’t tell me she hasn’t used her charms now and then!”
This time, Liliane didn’t rebuke her.
Jotham frowned. “Ramona isn’t like that. I know her better than anyone.”
“Oh, you do? Then why don’t you tell me what she’s hoping to achieve by running off? Is she planning to divorce you?” Follow current novᴇls on find⦿novel.net
Jotham fell silent.
Liliane let out a cold laugh. “You two can stop pretending with me. Brianna stayed here before, didn’t she?”
Jotham’s eyes shot to Winnie, who immediately shook her head, panic flickering in her expression. She’d never have dared confess that to Liliane.
“I found out myself. I may be old, but I haven’t survived this long by being blind. You can’t hide these
secrets and schemes from me.”
Liliane had sensed something was wrong from the moment Brianna showed up.
Women were naturally perceptive, and Ramona was no fool. Even if she didn’t know Brianna’s history with Jotham, it would be impossible not to pick up on the tension between them.
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
