Empire 137
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
This was Ramona’s birthday present for Ethan. She insisted on paying with her own card at the
register.
But as soon as she finished packing up the clothes, Ethan turned around and led her next door to a high–end jewelry boutique, where he picked out a pair of matching rings and a pair of bracelets for
them.
The rings and bracelets were elegantly simple; the lines were crisp and clean, free of ornate embellishments, yet the top–tier materials and exquisite craftsmanship gave them an understated, dazzling sheen.
Ramona’s gift–the designer clothes–had already cost over forty thousand dollars, but these rings and bracelets together came close to three hundred thousand.
She couldn’t help but laugh. “Today’s supposed to be my turn to give you a present.”
“You gave me yours, I’ll give you mine. Consider them wedding gifts,” Ethan said with a faint smile, slipping the ring and bracelet onto her fingers and wrist himself, then gesturing for her to do the same for him.
Ethan wore a wristwatch worth nearly a million dollars, and Ramona couldn’t hide her amusement. “These are matching pieces, Mr. Jordon. Are you really going to wear them to the office? Aren’t you worried people will tease you?”
“Let them talk,” Ethan murmured in her ear, his voice low and teasing.
No one around could hear what he said, but their affectionate exchange was enough to draw stares—and more than a few envious whispers drifted their way, leaving Ramona’s ears burning red all over again.
She hurried to help him with the bracelet, but instead of stacking it on the same wrist as his watch, she fastened it on his right wrist. The slender band looked striking against his sharply defined wrist bones, adding a surprising touch of sensuality and elegance.
Ramona’s gaze lingered for a moment before she blurted, “Ethan, did you know you have really beautiful hands?”
Ethan chuckled at her words, turning his hand to gently catch hers before she could pull away, his fingers naturally weaving between hers. Find the newest release on f͟i͟n͟d͟n͟o͟v͟e͟l͟.net
“I do now.”
His palm was warm against her skin, heat radiating through their touch, and Ramona could feel her cheeks and the tips of her ears grow hot again. She tried to slip her hand free, but he only held her tighter.
“Come on,” Ethan said, leading her out of the boutique. “What’s next on the agenda?”
“Hmm… dinner. I’m starving,” Ramona replied, glancing down at the gleaming rings on their fingers as she spoke.
By the time they finished dinner, it was nearly nine. Suddenly, as though struck by a thought, Ethan
tugged Ramona toward a nearby supermarket.
“What do you want to buy?” Ramona asked, curious. Ethan never struck her as the type to enjoy grocery shopping.
“I noticed your place is a bit bare. Let’s stock up on some things. It’ll make it easier for me to stay over, too,” he replied.
He almost never set foot in a supermarket, but Ethan knew that’s what married couples did, spending time together on little things like this. His own grandparents still loved shopping together, even after all these years. Suddenly, seeing the store, he just wanted an ordinary, domestic moment with Ramona.
At that thought, color crept up Ramona’s neck. They were husband and wife now–living together was only natural. And if Ethan wanted… well, that would be perfectly natural, too.
“What’s wrong?” Ethan noticed her sudden silence, glancing sideways at her.
“Nothing,” Ramona said quickly. “Buy whatever you want, my treat.” She grabbed a few bath products and tossed them into the cart.
Whatever Ramona picked up, Ethan matched, sweeping entire rows off the shelves and adding them to their cart. If she liked something, he figured he’d just buy more.
Ramona turned around after a few minutes and nearly choked at the sight of their overflowing cart. “Ethan, are you opening a shop or something?” she sputtered. “Who buys things by the row in a supermarket?”
She realized other shoppers were starting to follow them, eyeing their mountain of goods. Clearly, Ethan had wiped out everything they wanted to buy.
“Sorry, please, take these,” Ramona said apologetically, putting some items back.
“If you want something, just get it. We’re not here that often anyway. There’s plenty of space at your place. I’ll have Ash bring some people to help carry it all,” Ethan said coolly.
Ramona laughed, shaking her head. “Ethan, you’ve never done this before, have you? Grocery shopping isn’t about grabbing everything in sight. You just pick up what you need, maybe one or two extras. That way you can come back more often, and nothing goes to waste.”
“Come back often? With you?” Ethan seemed to latch onto just that part, his eyes suddenly intent.
Ramona found him impossibly endearing. “Of course,” she said at last. “As long as you want to come with me.”
She turned to put something on a high shelf, but couldn’t quite reach. Ethan stepped over and placed it there for her with ease.
He looked so tall and out of place here, a man built for boardrooms and power plays, now pushing a shopping cart for her in a supermarket. Yet somehow, he looked even more striking here.
Despite Ramona’s efforts to keep things under control, they still ended up nearly filling the entire trunk of Ethan’s roomy car.
On the drive home, Ramona’s phone rang–it was Florence.
Her heart skipped a beat. Only then did she realize that she and Ethan had gotten married without telling their families a word.
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
