Empire 152

The Paper Wife's Empire · NovelDrama.Org

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

Chapter 152

He was the head of a top financial empire… he was Ethan. And yet, in front of everyone, he’d dropped to one knee and proposed to a woman.

Even for someone like Ramona, daughter of the illustrious Covington family, this was a public honor beyond compare.

Inside, Ramona was a storm of emotions, her eyes brimming with tears that threatened to spill at any second.

Ethan’s brows were drawn together, his expression intensely serious. Those deep, unfathomable eyes–like the night sea scattered with starlight–were fixed on her face, holding her in their gravity. His gaze melted the last of the ice in her heart, sending warmth flooding through her like sunlight after a winter storm.

“Of course I will, Ethan,” she whispered. A smile broke through her tears, and at last, they slipped free, tracing glistening paths down her cheeks.

Her voice was as soft as a feather drifting to earth. Ethan’s face flushed, and he instinctively stood and swept Ramona into his arms once again.

The moment they embraced, the entire room erupted in applause. Someone even let out a delighted whoop. A few sentimental society ladies dabbed at their eyes with tissues, quietly

wiping away tears.

Their own marriages and courtships had always been grand, proper affairs, but to be genuinely overjoyed about tying the knot? That was almost unheard of. Ethan and Ramona–together, they were so perfectly matched it made people ache with envy.

With thunderous applause and heartfelt blessings all around, Ethan led Ramona back to their

seats.

The earlier awkwardness had vanished without a trace. Now, no one was thinking about Ramona’s past–only about the beautiful proposal they’d just witnessed. In everyone’s eyes, for Ramona to have earned the approval of the Jordon family and Ethan’s devotion, she must be exceptional herself.

So nobody gave another thought to the hurtful things that had been said before.

Only Solenne sat seething, biting her lip so hard she nearly drew blood. “That manipulative woman, what a show–off.”

Wisteria glanced at her, voice cool. “Well, at least her show is worth watching. Unlike some people, who can’t even get the chance to put on a show.”

“Wisteria, are you looking to get slapped?” Solenne snapped, but her mother quickly coughed

in warning.

If it weren’t for the fact that the party wasn’t over yet, Solenne would have slapped Wisteria right then and there. But she held back, for now.

No matter. If she couldn’t bring Ramona down, she’d make sure Wisteria paid the price. She’d settle the score, little by little.

What was meant to be an ambush had turned into a proposal party where Ramona was showered with respect. Melinda felt utterly humiliated. She barely touched her food before making her excuses and leaving, claiming she wasn’t feeling well.

Shortly after Melinda left, the Jordon family took Ramona away as well. With that, the evening was more or less over.

Holden, acting as the family’s representative, stayed to see the guests out.

As Fenton was escorting Yancey out, they ran into the Huxley family. Wisteria had changed into another dress and was quietly trailing behind them.

Yancey hesitated, then stepped forward and called after her.

“Wisteria.” For original chapters go to fındnovel.net

She flinched at the sound of his voice, glancing back at him. Her gaze lingered on his face for a heartbeat before she looked away. “What is it?”

“Your bracelet.” Yancey pulled a delicate bracelet from his pocket, its charm shaped like a teardrop, a rare blue gem glinting in the light.

It was the bracelet she’d lost during her earlier spat with Solenne. Yancey had spotted it on the floor and picked it up.

A flicker of emotion crossed Wisteria’s eyes. That sapphire–blue gem was a rare aquamarine, a gift from Yancey for her eighteenth birthday. He hadn’t had much pocket money back then; it had taken him ages to save up for it.

Wisteria had loved it, and soon after, turned it into a bracelet she’d worn ever since.

“It’s broken now, so I’m returning it,” Wisteria said quietly.

She looked at the bracelet, making no move to take it back, though her gaze stayed fixed on Yancey’s face.

He wore glasses now, his expression calm and unreadable. Since they’d stopped talking, he felt like a different person. Gone was the warmth, the impulsiveness, the easy honesty, now, all that remained was a hard, cold shell. Disciplined, humorless, and suffocatingly reserved.

“A gift is a gift. If you don’t want it, just throw it away,” he said, and pressed the bracelet into her hand before turning to leave.

In a burst of anger, Wisteria hurled the bracelet at his back.

“Yancey, you don’t have to treat me like this! If you can’t handle the game, then don’t play. Stop acting like I owe you something. Who do you think you are, anyway?”

With that, she stormed off in her heels.

Yancey paused, frozen for a moment, then turned and picked up the bracelet.

He knew all too well that he’d never meant anything to her. So why, after all this time, did it still hurt so much?

Fenton, watching nearby, looked on with a hint of concern before walking over to clap his son on the shoulder. “Yancey, going back is never easy.”

“I’m not,” Yancey replied, head bowed, quietly slipping the bracelet into his pocket.

“Good. But sometimes, willpower isn’t enough,” Fenton sighed. “You’re not getting any younger. Starting next week, I’ll introduce you to some eligible young ladies from good families.”

“Dad, there’s no rush-”

“You can’t spend your whole life at work. If you’re not in a hurry, I am! Seeing Ramona and Ethan today, didn’t it move you? My son’s outstanding; you’ll find someone just as wonderful.”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
