Empire 159

The Paper Wife's Empire · NovelDrama.Org

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

Chapter 159

Winnie rubbed her temples, muttering a curse through clenched teeth.

Just then, the maid hurried back in, empty–handed.

“Ma’am… The kitchen’s making you a fresh bowl of nourishing soup, but it’ll be a while,” she said, looking anxious.

Winnie scowled. “What do you mean? Didn’t I tell you to have it ready before my nap? Are you losing your mind?”

The maid looked stricken. “No, ma’am, I did make it. But Miss Brianna took it and drank it.”

“What?” Winnie stared at her in disbelief, anger flaring instantly. “That was mine! Who does she think she is?”

She shot the maid a withering glare, not waiting for another word before storming downstairs

in search of Brianna.

Winnie’s nerves were already frayed, and ever since Brianna had moved in, she hadn’t had a peaceful night’s sleep. But Brianna didn’t seem to care–every day was a whirlwind of noise with the child, or she’d be lounging around, barely bothering with pleasantries.

The only thing keeping Winnie from exploding was the thought that Milo was her grandson and the family business was at a crucial point.

But now, to have Brianna show such blatant disrespect–snatching what belonged to her, acting like she owned the place!

Brianna was in the living room, laughing and playing tag with Milo. At Winnie’s pointed cough, Brianna spotted her and paused, but Milo, caught up in the game, kept darting around his mother.

Winnie shot a look at the maid, who immediately rushed over to corral Milo.

“Young man, that’s enough. Your grandmother’s here,” she said gently.

Milo’s face fell. He darted behind Brianna, peeking out at Winnie with wide, fearful eyes.

He was her own grandson, but seeing him cling to Brianna like that only made Winnie’s heart

harden.

“Mom, you’re up from your nap. Did you need something?” Brianna’s tone was calm, a gentle smile curving her lips, though her eyes stayed cold as steel.

Winnie snorted. “Don’t call me that. I’m not about to pretend everything’s fine. What kind of daughter–in–law makes a racket while her mother–in–law is resting, then helps herself to what doesn’t belong to her? Brianna, you’re not even trying to hide your contempt anymore!” Original content can be found at find{n}ovel.net

“Oh, I apologize. I tried to keep it down, but Milo’s at home all day–per your rules, I’m not allowed to take him out. So we had to play here.

As for the soup… it was just sitting in the kitchen, and nobody told me it was yours. I didn’t know, so I drank it. Besides, Jotham said this is my home too, and I should feel comfortable. Surely you’re not that petty about a bowl of soup?”

Winnie had barely gotten out a sentence before Brianna volleyed back a flawless retort. Her tone was even, her expression unruffled, but every word was a deliberate challenge.

“Brianna, you’re so good with words. Don’t tell me you’re not doing this on purpose–trying to turn this house upside down,” Winnie shot back, eyes narrowing as she gestured for the maid to move Milo away from Brianna’s side. She stepped right up to Brianna, close enough to

feel the tension crackle between them.

There was a time when Brianna would cower around Winnie, shrinking away like a mouse from a cat. But now, no matter how intimidating Winnie tried to be, Brianna didn’t budge. Instead, her smile only deepened.

“Mom, you’re mistaken. I’m Jotham’s wife, a daughter–in–law of the Holt family. All I want is for things to go well here, for everyone, including you,” she said sweetly.

SMACK!

Brianna hadn’t even finished before Winnie’s hand came down hard across her face. She

didn’t care who was watching–even with Milo right there, Winnie didn’t hold back.

Brianna’s cheek blazed with red, the mark of Winnie’s hand swelling up almost instantly.

Milo’s eyes went wide with horror. He broke free from the maid and shouted, “You’re evil! Don’t hit my mom!”

“Shameless brat! Take him to his room. Let him think about his behavior! Like mother, like son. No wonder you’re so badly behaved!” Winnie snapped, not caring one bit about Brianna’s expression.

The maid, used to such orders, quickly covered Milo’s mouth and tried to drag him away.

“Don’t you dare touch my son!” Brianna’s voice rang out sharp and fierce. She rounded on the maid, her glare icy. “I’m the lady of this house too. If you lay a finger on Milo, you can pack your things and leave today!”

The maid froze, suddenly unsure, glancing helplessly at Winnie.

Winnie let out a cold laugh. “Brianna, since when did you become the Holt family’s mistress? Take him upstairs!”

“I’ll call Jotham and Dad right now!” Brianna shot back, pulling out her phone.

Winnie stiffened.

Griffin had warned her repeatedly to tread carefully with Brianna, and the situation between Jotham and Brianna was still under wraps.

But Brianna was pushing every boundary. How was she supposed to swallow this humiliation?

“What’s going on in here?” came a new voice.

Liliane, escorted by two maids, made her slow way into the room, stopping beside Milo.

He glared at Winnie, red–eyed and trembling all over, his breath coming in ragged, tearful gasps.

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
