Empire 179

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were. Updates are released by f͟i͟n͟d͟n͟o͟v͟e͟l͟.net

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

Ethan didn’t respond to Ramona right away. He looked at her with an intensity she couldn’t quite decipher, as if something heavy was weighing on his mind.

She shifted uneasily, feeling the tension in the air. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

He hesitated for a moment before speaking, his fingers gently brushing through her hair. “Jotham is

downstairs.”

Though his voice was calm and even, something about it made Ramona’s heart sink.

“You saw all that?” Her eyes flashed with a hint of panic. She sat up straight, rushing to explain, “Don’t get the wrong idea, please. I just happened to run into him today, and I made everything clear with him!”

She’d chosen to settle things with Jotham today because of Ethan. After thinking it through these past days, she realized what mattered most wasn’t the past, but the present. If Ethan was unhappy with her ties to the Holt Group, she was ready to let it all go–her grudges, her connections, everything.

“I’m not misunderstanding anything,” Ethan said quietly. “But seeing another man pester you…” His eyes darkened, betraying a chill he was trying to suppress. “I can’t help feeling upset.”

He trusted Ramona completely and didn’t think Jotham was any real competition. Still, that twinge of jealousy lingered, refusing to leave him.

Ethan pulled Ramona into his arms. Despite the strength in his broad shoulders and the calm that seemed to surround him, there was a vulnerability there she hadn’t noticed before.

Touched, Ramona wrapped her arms around his back, soothing him like one might calm a lion.

“I’m sorry. I won’t let you see something like that again,” she murmured, her voice gentle. “What can I do to make you feel better? If there’s anything you want, just tell me. I’ll do my best.”

He was quiet for a moment, then said, almost offhandedly, “I had someone rough him up a bit. Nothing too minor. He’ll probably spend the night in the hospital.”

Ramona blinked in surprise, but then nodded. “Good. Thanks for sticking up for me.”

“I’ve arranged for tighter security in the building.”

“Mhm.”

“I don’t think this place is right for us anymore. Let’s move.”

“What?”

“We should start looking for a new home, a place for us. I’ve already asked Ash to get the information together. We’ll choose whatever you like.”

With that, Ethan finally let her go, and when he looked at her, the shadows in his eyes had lifted, replaced by a gentle, almost playful smile.

“So this is what you were waiting to tell me,” Ramona teased, shaking her head. “If we move, you’ll

stop being upset?”

He nodded, solemn and sincere. “I just don’t want anyone interfering in our lives.”

“Alright,” Ramona agreed, tilting her head to study the sharp lines of his face, which somehow seemed softer in this moment.

Later that evening, Ramona excitedly showed Ethan the jewelry she had picked out–one piece for Florence, another for Shelby. She’d chosen them herself, but wasn’t sure if they’d suit their tastes.

Ethan barely glanced at the jewelry; his attention never really left Ramona. “If you picked them, I’m sure they’ll love them.”

Ramona looked up, catching his intense gaze. She smiled. “Is there any CEO in Havencrest City better at sweet–talking than you?”

He grinned and leaned close, brushing her hair aside to whisper, “I don’t know about that. But I do know no one could possibly love you more than I do.”

She felt her cheeks flush, her heartbeat racing. Ethan always managed to say the most shamelessly affectionate things with such straightforward ease!

“Oh, right,” Ethan said suddenly, remembering. “I found what you wanted me to look into.”

Time always seemed to slip away when he was with Ramona, and he often forgot about business.

He stood, retrieving a folder and handing it to her–information about Melinda and Holden.

Ramona was working in the daylight, while Melinda and Holden hid in the shadows. It wasn’t easy to find anything on them; both kept their lives and backgrounds extremely private. Even with considerable effort, Ethan had only managed to uncover a few details, mostly about Holden.

Melinda was the second daughter in the Yarrow family. Though she was favored, she hadn’t received many of the family’s resources. She’d used various means to gain more influence at home, making enemies in the process. It wasn’t until she got together with Benedict that she found her footing in Covington Group.

So it was clear–Melinda wanted control of Covington Group and had no intention of letting go.

Holden, however, was a different story. Melinda had adopted him when he was five and raised him as her own. His loyalty to Covington Group was mostly out of gratitude.

But there was one critical point: Holden’s biological parents had once been executives at the Yarrow family’s company. They were convicted of corporate espionage, but before they could be imprisoned, they died suddenly in a car crash.

After their deaths, Melinda took Holden in herself and brought him with her when she married into the Covington family.

By rights, Holden’s parents had only been company executives. They barely knew Melinda, certainly not well enough for her to adopt their child, especially after Benedict’s illness made it impossible for him to have children of his own.

“You’re saying Melinda might have had something to do with Holden’s parents‘ deaths?” Ramona asked, eyes widening as she leaned in closer, curiosity piqued.

Ethan nodded, so near their lips almost touched. “Melinda doesn’t do anything unless there’s something in it for her. There’s not a single detail left to investigate in Holden’s parents‘ case, everything’s been wiped clean. Don’t you think… something about this doesn’t add up?”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
