Empire 181
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Chapter 181
Early yesterday morning, Nova received a call from her younger brother, Heath. He said the school had refused to register him because of their family background.
But Nova had already poured a lot of money into getting him into that school, one of the top high schools in the city. Heath had worked so hard to get accepted. If he lost this chance, it would only get harder for him to get into a good college later.
Just as Nova was reeling from the news, a text from Holden popped up on her phone. He asked if she was having any trouble and offered to help.
Nova instantly realized Heath’s problems were linked to Holden. Without hesitation, she went looking
for Ramona.
But Holden seemed to have anticipated her move and cornered Nova in the elevator lobby.
“Nova, do you honestly think Ramona can save you?” he said, his tone mocking. “You don’t have connections. Ramona might be able to help you once or twice, but not for your whole life. Do you really want to depend on her forever? Don’t you care about your brother’s future? And what about your mother’s illness? Are you going to just ignore that too?”
His threat was clear. Today it was Heath; tomorrow, it would be Nova’s mother.
In Havencrest City, the Covington family’s power ran deep. Even if Ramona still had some authority at Covington Group, if Holden decided to use underhanded methods, there was little she could do to stop him.
“I could never betray Ramona. If it comes to it, I’ll just resign!” Nova shot back.
“Suit yourself.” Holden’s smile was casual, almost lazy. “You know, I’m not as terrible as you think. I just have a small request. Do this one thing for me, and I promise I’ll never bother you again.”
Holden wanted data from a project Ramona had recently taken over. As Ramona’s team lead and most trusted colleague, Nova often copied files for her and was the only one who knew Ramona’s computer password.
However, the key data for major projects was always locked behind a secure key, something Nova couldn’t access.
So if Holden was telling the truth, it was just an ordinary project file. According to him, he needed this data to help Melinda’s team compete for another project. It wouldn’t affect Ramona at all.
But Nova didn’t believe a word Holden said. She spent half an hour in Ramona’s office, and just as she was leaving, she ran straight into Ramona in the hallway.
“Nova? Were you looking for me?”
Seeing Nova coming from her office, Ramona looked a bit confused.
“Yes, Ramona,” Nova replied, her expression flustered. “I wanted to talk to you about something.”
“Is this what you wanted to discuss with me the other night?” Ramona asked gently.
Nova nodded. “…That’s right.”

“Okay, let’s talk inside.”
But as Ramona was about to open her office door, Holden came striding down the hallway.
The moment Nova saw him, she quickly ducked her head, avoiding his gaze.
“Morning, Ramona,” Holden greeted, and Ramona responded with a polite smile. “Good morning, Mr. Covington.”
“There’s a meeting I need you at,” Holden said, glancing from Ramona to Nova. “Just a few quick decisions to go over. Everyone’s waiting.”
“I’ll be right there.” Ramona sent Holden on his way with a nod, then turned to Nova. “I’ll be back
soon.”
“Ramona.” Nova grabbed her arm, her voice urgent. “Be careful around Holden. And Nadia too. And… don’t push yourself so hard at work anymore. Your health is what matters most.”
Ramona frowned, picking up on the strange tension in Nova’s voice. “Nova, what’s going on? You sound like you’re saying goodbye.”
“No, I’m just worried about you,” Nova replied, avoiding her eyes. “I should get back to work.”
Before Ramona could say anything else, Nova hurried away.
Ramona was left puzzled, but before she could think it over, Holden’s assistant came to fetch her for the meeting. Thɪs chapter is updated by fιɴdnοvel.net
When Ramona finally emerged from the meeting and went looking for Nova, she found her desk completely cleared out.
She immediately questioned the other four team members, but they were just as confused.
Nova had come in that morning, bought everyone breakfast and lattes. She’d told them she was heading to the restroom before their project meeting, then never came back. When the team returned from the meeting, Nova’s desk was spotless, as if she’d already quit.
Ramona’s heart sank. She reached for her phone to call Nova, only to see a resignation email pop up
on her screen.
It was from Nova.
How could this be? Ramona knew how much Nova needed this job.
She dialed Nova’s number, but it went straight to voicemail.
Back in her office, Ramona found Nova’s resignation letter sitting on her desk. She opened it to find a heartfelt note. Nova thanked her for everything, said she was leaving for personal reasons, and that she couldn’t bring herself to say goodbye in person, so she’d written a letter instead.
Ramona felt a tightness in her chest. Nova was not someone who would just walk away without a word.
Ramona remembered how off Nova had seemed at the business dinner with the Shepard family, but she’d chalked it up to Nova feeling unwell and hadn’t thought much more of it.
Now it was clear–she hadn’t paid enough attention to Nova.

Ramona didn’t process Nova’s resignation. Instead, she texted her: Whatever’s happened, I hope you’ll trust me enough to talk to me face–to–face.
“What–what did you say? Ramona already knows about you and Brianna?”
In the Holt family’s living room, everyone’s faces were grave.
Jotham had taken a serious beating the night before and spent hours at the hospital getting stitches
and an IV.
Brianna had stayed by his side all night, and they’d only returned home late that morning.
But Jotham hadn’t told anyone that it was one of Ramona’s men who had beaten him up.
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
