This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

But almost immediately, Jotham began to doubt himself. The voice had sounded so much like Ramona, yet there was a clarity and distant chill to it that didn’t quite match her usual tone. He was probably just hearing what he wanted to hear-after all, he’d been obsessing lately over why she hadn’t replied to any of his messages.

It was only a few curt words, he told himself. He must have misheard.

Lost in thought, Jotham didn’t notice the bodyguard pocketing the business card and returning to the car. The woman didn’t spare him another glance; the car turned and pulled away without hesitation.

Jotham stared after the departing vehicle, standing frozen on the spot for a long time, unable to collect himself.

Inside the car, the bodyguard handed the business card to Ramona and asked respectfully, “Miss, this is from the CEO of Holt Group.”

The Covington family had no shortage of potential partners; industry titans lined up for a chance to work with them. A company like Holt Group didn’t even deserve to be on the list.

Ramona didn’t bother to take the card. With a frosty glance at her assistant, she instructed, “Blacklist their company. The Covington Group will never do business with them.”

“Yes, ma’am,” the assistant replied promptly.

Later that night, Ramona received another message from Jotham.

He’d tried calling, but she hadn’t answered. So he resorted to sending several texts, asking when she’d be coming home. She read them but didn’t reply.

Days went by like this. Jotham couldn’t get in touch with Ramona at all,

and eventually, his patience ran out.

He hated the idea of backing down, but the truth was, without Ramona, the company was grinding to a halt.

When Jotham finally arrived home, Brianna noticed right away that something was off. His expression was stormy.

“What’s wrong? Is the company still struggling?” she asked gently, reaching out in an attempt to comfort him.

But Jotham brushed past her without a word and headed straight for

Ramona’s room. ɪꜰ ʏᴏᴜ ᴡᴀɴᴛ ᴛᴏ ʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴍᴏʀᴇ ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀs, ᴘʟᴇᴀsᴇ ᴠɪsɪᴛ find[ɴ]ovel.net

He flung open the door-and stopped short. The room was completely empty.

Not only was the bed perfectly made, with no sign anyone had ever slept there, but the wardrobe, the dresser, every corner was spotless and bare. It looked as if no one had ever lived here at all.

“How is this possible?”

Jotham stood there, dumbstruck. He’d thought Ramona was just upset and staying somewhere else for a few days. It never crossed his mind that she’d cleared out her room entirely.

Brianna, seeing the empty room, couldn’t help showing a flicker of surprise herself.

During the day, she was either out with Milo or working from home. The house was so big, she simply assumed Ramona was out at work as usual. They hadn’t run into each other lately, and the silence suited her just fine.

Ramona was best when she was invisible, just a quiet, efficient worker behind the scenes. Ideally, she’d leave early, come home late, and focus solely on helping Jotham manage the company-never showing up in their lives.

So Brianna hadn’t thought anything of Ramona’s absence. It never occurred to her that Ramona had moved out for good.

“When did Ramona move out?” Brianna murmured in disbelief.

Suddenly, Milo burst in, clapping his hands in delight. “Yes! The mean lady’s finally gone! Hooray!”

“Shut up!” Jotham snapped, something inside him snapping as well. A wave of hot anger rushed to his head, and before he could stop himself, his hand came down hard.

Milo had never been hit by Jotham before, and the blow was harsh. He fell to the floor, stunned and crying.

Brianna’s eyes flashed with shock and fury. She yelled, “Jotham! How could you hit Milo so hard?”

She rushed to her son’s side, and saw his cheek already swelling red

where he’d been struck.

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
