Empire 39
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Empire 39
The voice that spoke up was anything but friendly. Ramona glanced over and recognized a vaguely familiar face.
She couldn’t remember the woman’s name, but she recalled, hazily, that she was one of Brianna’s protégés-someone who’d been in the same
class as Jotham.
“Kiki Dawson, you’re just bitter because you can’t get what you want. Maybe you should hurry up and try online dating for once, since you’ve been single for years!” Tara shot back without hesitation, defending Ramona without missing a beat.
“Tara, you don’t understand anything, so stay out of this.” Kiki rolled her eyes. “Let me tell you, the only reason Jotham settled for Ramona is because he couldn’t have the woman he truly wanted.”
As soon as Kiki’s words landed, the room fell silent. It was as if someone had ripped the mask off a well-kept secret-smiles vanished, and the old classmates who’d just been chatting eagerly with Ramona now avoided her gaze, unsure how to react.
The air turned icy. ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ꜰʀᴏᴍ Find[ɴ]ovel.net
Ramona froze for a moment. She didn’t need Kiki to spell it out to know Jotham’s heart belonged elsewhere.
But their reactions weren’t what she expected. Normally, people would be curious, gossip, question, or even argue back. But this silence…it felt like tacit agreement.
So, plenty of people already knew about Jotham and Brianna, and she’d been the only one left in the dark. She remembered the well-wishes and envy she received back in school, how she’d once believed herself to be the luckiest woman on earth.
The thought made Ramona’s lips curl into a bitter smile. She had to

admit, it was almost comical.
Tara, however, was quick to flush with anger. “Kiki, that’s enough! Don’t spew nonsense just because you’re jealous of Ramona!”
“I’m just telling the truth. No one knows who’s in love and who isn’t better than the people involved.” Kiki snorted, barely sparing Tara a glance. She tilted her chin, her gaze sliding over to Ramona with open challenge. “Besides, look at Ramona now, what is there to be jealous of?”
“Oh, please,” Tara shot back. “You’re jealous of Ramona’s looks, her talent, and the fact that someone actually loves her. Everyone at school knew you were always competing with her.”
Tara wasn’t wrong. Kiki had always been envious of Ramona.
Back in their university days, Kiki had been at the top of her game. She’d been photographed during freshman orientation, and her striking figure and impeccable style made her a minor celebrity online-the so-called “Finance Department Goddess” of Havencrest University.
But before long, she was constantly compared to Ramona. Whatever Kiki wanted seemed to end up in Ramona’s hands-whether it was the attention of the entire campus, the best opportunities for further study, scholarships, or those coveted recommendations from international
corporations.
Wherever Kiki appeared, Ramona was always there. And wherever Ramona showed up, Kiki inevitably came in second, or worse, ended up as the backup.
Gossip had it that Kiki was always picking up Ramona’s leftovers, copying whatever Ramona did. The more the rumors spread, the more Kiki’s resentment grew.
Of course, Ramona had been oblivious to all this. Her only impression of Kiki was as Brianna Prescott’s star student-the go-getter who seemed to show up at every event.
But watching Kiki’s hostility now, Ramona couldn’t help but agree with Tara: the jealousy was obvious.
“What do you mean, I was competing with her? It’s not my fault everyone at school always compared us,” Kiki snapped, her tone sharper, her smile strained.
“But time tells all, doesn’t it? You see someone’s true colors in the long run. Sure, Ramona shone in college, but after graduation, everyone can see the difference. She’s just a housewife living off a man’s goodwill, while I have everything I want.”
She finished her tirade by flaunting her designer jewelry and clothes, her pride on full display.
Tara started to retort, but Ramona stopped her with a gentle smile.
“Kiki, you say I’ve been living off a man’s charity. Is that what you think happened to me at Holt Group-that Jotham provided for me?”
Her tone was calm. “Seems you’re not as well informed about my career as you think.”
Kiki stiffened, her chin raised defiantly. “Isn’t that the case? Jotham was the most eligible guy on campus, came from a wealthy family, you-”
“When Holt Group was on the brink of bankruptcy, I brought in the first multimillion-dollar investment. I single-handedly turned the company around until it was valued at over a billion.” Ramona’s voice was steady, each word clear. “The ‘difference’ you’re talking about? While I was building value for Holt Group, you were probably busy figuring out which brands to wear to impress strangers.”
Kiki had dressed to the nines tonight-every inch of her covered in luxury labels, glittering with gold and jewels, hair and makeup flawless.
Now, as eyes around the table drifted her way, she shrank a little under the scrutiny.
Ramona, meanwhile, didn’t miss a beat. “You use luxury goods to prove

your worth. I use my ability to stand on my own. Which of us cares more about other people’s opinions, I wonder?”
Kiki scoffed, “It’s not like Holt Group is even your company. You wouldn’t have gotten anywhere if Jotham hadn’t given you the chance!”
There it was again, her constant need to bring Jotham into the
conversation.
With a sharp clink, Ramona set her glass down, the sound cracking through the already tense atmosphere.
“Oh, I owe it all to Jotham, is that it?”
“That’s right! Without him, you’d be nothing!”
Ramona had tried to hold her tongue out of respect for Tara, not wanting to cause a scene. But Kiki just kept pushing, circling back to Jotham over and over, trampling right over Ramona’s boundaries.
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
