Empire 45
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Jotham was momentarily stunned. He rarely checked his group chats, having muted all the school and class notifications a long time ago.
Before he could finish scrolling through the messages, several old classmates started texting him directly as well.
They all wanted to know: What happened with Ramona?
A spike of anxiety jolted Jotham out of his thoughts. He immediately reached for his phone, intent on calling Ramona.
“She’s fine, I’m sure. If Ramona had time to show up for a reunion but wouldn’t even speak to you, she’s just playing games. For all you know, she stirred this up on purpose, just to make you come running after her.”
Brianna had expected to watch the drama unfold, but the instant Jotham’s first reaction was to reach out to Ramona, her mood soured.
He really cares about her that much?
Her words brought Jotham back to his senses, if only a little. She was right; it was late, and even if he tried to call, Ramona probably wouldn’t answer. It would only make him look desperate.
Their chat thread was still one-sided-Jotham’s messages, and nothing
from her.
He’d already bent over backwards for her, even argued with his mother and Eulalia on her behalf, and yet Ramona still refused to compromise. She insisted he hand over shares of the Holt Group, refusing to back
down.
The more he thought about it, the angrier he got. He shoved his phone away and said, voice low, “So what exactly happened?”
Brianna, seeing he wasn’t going to chase after Ramona anymore, finally spoke up. “Apparently, Ramona had a falling out with Kiki at the reunion.
Kiki posted an apology video, then left the group.”
Brianna had actually tried to contact Kiki herself just now.
Kiki had deleted everyone but left Brianna on her contacts. Even so, Kiki hadn’t replied to any of Brianna’s messages.
“Kiki?” Jotham asked.
“You don’t remember? She was in your class. I tutored her for a while. She’s clever and pretty-though, unfortunately, she was always being compared to Ramona. Maybe she got singled out again at the reunion.”
Brianna’s tone was gentle, but every word was laced with sympathy for Kiki and a veiled jab at Ramona.
Jotham was watching Kiki’s video. She looked shaken, eyes avoiding the camera, her voice trembling. If anything, she seemed more afraid than wronged.
In his memory, Kiki had always been brash and outspoken, not the kind to roll over if someone picked on her.
She’d even pursued him once, and after he turned her down, she’d confronted him in person, cursing him out.
“Maybe she did something to Ramona-something she got caught for? Otherwise, why would she post a video that makes herself look so bad?”
Jotham frowned, thinking aloud.
Brianna snatched her phone back. “She hasn’t even spoken to Ramona in two years! What could she possibly have done? Who posts something like that for no reason? Clearly, she was bullied. I swear, Ramona’s got you completely brainwashed!”
The fact that Jotham still called her “Ramona” in front of Brianna was
almost more than she could take.
“Ramona wouldn’t go out of her way to hurt someone.”

Even as Brianna’s patience frayed, Jotham held his ground, his voice heavy and mood darkening.
Ramona’s face floated into his mind.
Sure, Ramona was the school’s undisputed beauty, but that wasn’t why he’d kept her close.
He’d first seen her during freshman orientation, on a day when rain poured down in sheets, and the registration hall overflowed with
students huddled without umbrellas.
A frail-looking girl, arms full of heavy documents, was knocked down. Her papers scattered across the ground, instantly soaked.
The culprit was a ragged homeless man, notorious for begging during
crowded events.
No one helped the girl gather her papers. Instead, a few troublemakers took the opportunity to push the homeless man down, shouting and shoving.
Jotham, a member of the student council, hurried over to break it up.
But before he could reach them, a slender figure darted into the rain. She <nelt to help the girl rescue her documents, then stood up and shouted at the boys, positioning herself protectively in front of the homeless man.
The group was big and aggressive, their tempers hot and language foul, out she didn’t back down. She defended the weak and called the police, undeterred by their threats.
That girl was Ramona. Fresh chapters posted on FіndNovel.net
From that moment, Jotham was drawn to her.
He’d always been calculating, careful to protect his own interests. He’d never risk himself for a stranger. But Ramona didn’t hesitate. She would never stand by and let injustice go unchallenged-not even if it put her in harm’s way.

How could someone like that ever bully others?
Over the years, Ramona’s selflessness and understanding had made Jotham believe that some people were simply born with integrity, never needing to step on others to climb higher. Her pride was in her bones; she faced her battles head-on, never by making trouble for someone else.
“So you trust Ramona that much?”
Brianna’s nerves snapped. She shot to her feet, eyes blazing as she stared him down, her voice shaking.
“So now you think I’m just bad-mouthing her? Slandering your precious Ramona?”
“Not this again.” Jotham had seen this coming and sighed, his voice weary. “I’m just saying, based on what I know of her, I really don’t think it’s the way you say.”
“When a man’s caught up in someone, he can’t see her clearly at all.” Brianna’s voice was cold. She turned away, her eyes shining with tears she tried to hide.
Jotham’s heart clenched. He blurted out, “Brianna, you know I’d never have feelings for Ramona!”
He didn’t think he felt anything special for Ramona, but Brianna’s accusation left a heaviness in his chest he couldn’t quite name.
“Really? Then why is it, after everything she’s done, abandoning the company, leaving you to clean up her mess, you’re still so willing to forgive her?”

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
