Empire 61

The Paper Wife's Empire · NovelDrama.Org

This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.

A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.

Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken. Read full story at Find_Novel(.)net

Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.

Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.

Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.

Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.

A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.

rry to trouble you…”

Chapter 61

Ramona pressed her cheek against his chest, her breath barely there.

She truly had nothing left to give, but for some reason, Ethan’s arms felt so warm, so comforting. The pain that had just been tearing through her body now seemed to dull, almost as if it were melting away in his embrace.

“You don’t need to apologize.”

“… But I… right now, you’re the only one I could reach, Mr. Jordon…”

Her words slipped out in a whisper, so soft they were nearly lost to the storm outside.

But Ethan heard every word, and his heart twisted with guilt; he regretted how harsh he’d sounded earlier.

“It’s only right you called me.”

His tone softened, gentle and low.

Outside, the rain pounded down in torrents. Ethan had rushed over without an umbrella, sheltering Ramona with his coat as he hurried her safely into the car.

He ended up drenched from head to toe. Ramona, on the other hand, seemed utterly spent. The moment she got into the car, she drifted off to sleep.

Ethan watched her, her face still taut with pain, and let out a slow breath. He pulled a blanket over her before calling his housekeeper, instructing them to prepare hot water, painkillers, and to ready a room for her.

Ramona had tried to give her own address, insisting on going home, but Ethan hadn’t even listened. In her condition, there was no way he’d let her spend the night alone.

Back at his place, Ethan carried her straight to the bedroom. The staff had already prepared everything, quickly helping Ramona get changed and settled.

Ethan waited just outside the door, not entering again until after the doctor had finished his examination.

“How is she?”

Seeing the thin sheen of sweat still on Ramona’s forehead, Ethan touched her gently with the back of his hand. She didn’t feel nearly as feverish as before.

He grabbed a tissue and softly dabbed her brow. His movements were a little clumsy, but to the people watching, it was almost astonishing.

Ethan Jordon, actually taking care of someone?

The doctor spoke quietly, “Don’t worry, Mr. Jordon. I’ve already given Ms. Jarrett something for the pain. Her body’s weak, she’s exhausted. It would be good to schedule a full check–up soon.”

“She’s still not awake?”

“It looks like Ms. Jarrett is just severely overtired.”

It was only after hearing she’d be alright that Ethan finally relaxed.

He was still soaked from the rain; his hair clung to his forehead, a stark contrast to his usual polished appearance. But since returning, his attention had been solely on Ramona, he hadn’t even thought about changing his clothes.

It wasn’t until the housekeeper reminded him that he started to leave, but suddenly, he felt a tug at his pant leg.

He glanced down–Ramona’s hand was gripping him tightly. She was still unconscious, her brow furrowed, her face ghostly pale. Her lips moved, dry and cracked, as if she were mumbling through a nightmare. Her body trembled faintly.

“Sir, please, you should get some rest. We’ll take care of Ms. Jarrett,” the housekeeper offered quickly. Ethan swallowed, then raised his hand. “You can all go.”

The staff exchanged startled glances, but when Ethan gave an order, it was absolute. They all left at

once.

Now, only the two of them remained. The room was so quiet, he could hear Ramona’s uneven breathing.

“What are you saying?” he murmured.

Her mouth kept moving. Curious, Ethan leaned closer to catch her words.

“Data…”

Even in sleep, Ramona’s anxiety was palpable. She muttered about the project, her voice fragmented and restless.

Ethan listened for a while, his own brow knotting with concern. Just as he was about to leave, her voice trembled again:

“…Mr. Jordon… thank you…”

Those final words fell into the silence like a pebble dropped in a still lake, sending ripples through Ethan’s heart that he barely recognized.

He hesitated, then reached out, brushing the tangled hair from her face and gently freeing his hand from her grasp, tucking it back under the covers.

But Ramona only calmed for a moment before she started tossing again, her voice catching as though she were about to cry.

Ethan had just taken off his shirt, intending to shower in the next room, when he heard her stir. He hurried back to the bedside.

Ramona seemed frightened, lurching forward to wrap her arms around his bare chest.

She was burning hot, while Ethan’s skin was ice–cold from the rain. The sudden contact sent a jolt through both of them.

Ramona blinked, her lashes misted with tears, slowly coming to her senses.

Her mind was foggy; for a moment, she didn’t know where she was or what she was doing. All she knew was that her hands rested somewhere cool and solid, firm and comforting…

It felt unmistakably like a man’s skin.

“Ramona.”

Ethan felt her hands wandering over him and called her name sharply.

That snapped her back to herself.

“Ethan?”

She jerked away from him, nearly falling back onto the bed.

Ethan caught her arm just in time, and in the scramble, they both tumbled onto the mattress.

Ethan, strong and steady, quickly righted himself, bracing his hands on either side of her head, his body sheltering her completely from the world.

Ramona’s pupils widened, and all she could see was an endless expanse of muscle, filling her vision.

The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.

Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.

Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?

Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.

With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
