Empire 72
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
The Covington family, on the other hand, showed up with a noticeably smaller group today.
Only Fenton’s family, a few of Fenton’s close friends, and Ramona’s own small circle of five friends.
Melinda claimed to be unwell and stayed home; Holden used work as an excuse, saying he couldn’t get away from the office. Still, they each sent a few gifts, one set for Ramona and one for the Covingtons–just enough to keep up appearances.
Florence accompanied Ramona as they greeted guests around the room. “Ramona, you chat with your friends,” she said warmly. “I’ll go check on things over there. Don’t want any surprises when the dinner officially starts.”
Ramona gave Florence a quick hug and whispered a thank you.
Florence beamed like a child and handed each of Ramona’s friends an envelope.
As soon as Florence walked away, everyone tore theirs open in excitement.
“Oh my god–this is… this is huge!” Nova stared at the check inside her envelope, on the verge of tears.
The envelope was so thin that she’d assumed it was just a token gesture, maybe a gift card or a small bill. Instead, inside was a check. And not just any check: the amount was staggering.
Everyone was so shocked they had to cover their mouths. It was, hands down, the largest cash gift any of them had ever received.
And this was just an engagement dinner. If this was what they got now, what about the actual wedding?
The thought barely settled in before everyone latched onto Ramona’s hands.
“Ramona, please, I have to come to your wedding!”
“I swear, from now on, Ramona is my honorary big sister!”
“Ramona, whatever happens, we’re sticking with you, ride or die!”
Ramona laughed, cheeks flushed. “All right, all right, you’re being ridiculous!” Follow current novᴇls on Find~Novel.net
But she couldn’t help grinning. The Jordon family’s generosity was something else. Even though they’d only just met, every single person had welcomed her with a warmth she never expected.
She’d long ago stopped hoping for anything from this so–called “high society” marriage. But for the first time, a flutter of hope stirred in her heart.
With such a gentle stepmother and kind grandparents, she was experiencing a kind of familial warmth she’d never known.
Ethan was perfectly punctual–eight o’clock on the dot, he appeared at the entrance of the ballroom.
Tonight he wore a crisp black suit, tall and striking, the crystal chandeliers above only highlighting his extraordinary good looks and quiet confidence.

He crossed the room to join Ramona, and conversation in the hall died instantly.
All eyes turned to them. Though they stood quietly off to one side, the way the chandelier’s light fell on them, it was as if the whole room’s attention converged just on the two of them.
It was hard to find words to capture how perfect they looked together.
“Mr. Jordon, you’re here,” Ramona said, stepping forward with a soft smile.
Her gaze, warm beneath subtle makeup, seemed to melt even the iciest heart.
Ethan was momentarily caught off guard before nodding. “Sorry I’m late.”
“You’re not late at all. Your timing is perfect.” She linked her arm through his, her voice low.
Ethan’s composure faltered just a little. At that moment, the emcee finished his introduction and invited them to the stage to exchange rings.
Phineas and Florence stepped up as well, presenting the wedding rings with great formality.
Ethan had picked out the rings long ago–simple, elegant, exquisitely made. The size and quality of the diamond were beyond impressive, sure to make anyone envious.
When Ramona saw the ring slide onto her finger, her heart was a swirl of emotions.
Ethan’s hands were beautiful. Under the lights, she couldn’t tell whether it was the diamond or his touch that dazzled her more.
“Ramona, you look stunning tonight.”
His voice, low and steady, was suddenly so close it set her heart pounding.
“Thank you,” she managed, face flushing as she looked up into his usually cool, distant eyes. Tonight, though, they seemed to hold a thousand stars.
After a slight pause, Ramona slipped the ring onto Ethan’s finger as well. “Mr. Jordon, I hope you’ll take good care of me from now on.”
He didn’t answer, just squeezed her hand and, amid thunderous applause, gently drew her into his
arms.
Ramona felt shy but kept her composure.
Ethan was the perfect gentleman–polite, respectful, never crossing the line.
Florence had kept the engagement dinner simple. After Ethan and Ramona made their appearance and did the formalities, the rest was just speeches from the elders, and then everyone was free to eat and mingle without any strict protocol.
Ramona, with Ethan at her side, joined her own little group at their table.
“Let me introduce you,” she said. “These are my former colleagues and friends, now my partners in crime on our latest project.”
“Nice to meet you, Mr. Jordon!” her friends chorused, jumping to their feet in nervous unison.
Ethan nodded gravely, shaking each of their hands in turn.

Ramona hadn’t expected him to be so gracious. She’d only meant to make a quick introduction so he could go do his own thing, but he was giving her friends his full attention.
They were all equally caught off guard. Some of them even trembling as they shook his hand. Even Nova, who’d met Ethan before, found herself tongue–tied in his presence.
Chapter 73
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
