Empire 77
This chapter makes a quiet but clear adjustment to the story. Small choices and brief pauses point the plot in a new direction. The shift is steady, not loud, and it sets up what comes next.
A few actions and reactions stand out. A held-back answer, a quick decision, or a look that lingers changes how characters see each other. These beats feel small now but carry weight forward.
Emotions sit just under the surface. The tone shows doubt, hope, or pressure even when the words stay measured. What is not said guides the scene as much as what is spoken.
Earlier choices and old tensions shape how people act here. History does not repeat, but it limits and nudges. The present is easier to read when the past is kept in view.
Trust, distance, and leverage shift by degrees. Roles adjust, and the space between characters changes shape. By the end, connections are not exactly what they were.
Objects, gestures, and setting notes do quiet work. They mirror the mood and hint at motives. Paying attention to them clarifies what is at stake.
Short remarks, paused replies, and choices made too quickly point to what will matter soon. The chapter plants markers that future scenes will pick up.
A few sentences carry the heart of the scene. They show fear, resolve, or longing in simple words. These are the lines that will echo next chapter.
Of course Ramona knew the truth–if Jotham had truly wanted to hand over shares, he would’ve done it long ago.
She’d been keeping tabs on Holt Group for weeks. Just today, word reached her: Griffin had dropped by the office, and Brianna had resigned shortly after. This ten percent stake Jotham dangled was clearly Griffin’s idea, not his own. Chapters first released on f͟i͟n͟d͟n͟o͟v͟e͟l͟.net
Sure enough, Jotham’s call came through again.
Ramona’s gaze darkened. After a thoughtful pause, she found an empty, secluded conference room to take the call. She’d kept him waiting long enough; it was time to show up–if only a little.
“Ramona! Thank God, you finally picked up,” Jotham blurted out, sounding downright desperate, any trace of bravado gone.
“Is there something you need?” Ramona answered, voice cool and detached, though they both knew she already understood.
He tried to keep his tone gentle, even as irritation flickered beneath. “Did you see my message? I can transfer half of my shares to you. Let’s stop fighting, okay? I really miss you, Ramona. Please, can we just make up?”
She listened, frowning, then let a faint, mocking smile curve her lips. “It took you this long to agree, and even now it’s only ten percent? I distinctly remember asking for half the company. Seems you’re still not willing”
“That’s not true! I really have tried my best. Please, Ramona, stop making this so hard for me. Can you really stand to see me suffer? I only own twenty percent. All the rest is with my father and the board.”
He tried again, this time playing the sympathy card.
*Suffering?” Ramona scoffed. “Are you upset about the company’s losses, or upset about losing me? Funny how you only remember me now that Brianna’s gone. She was already replacing me before I left, wasn’t she?”
Her pointed question left Jotham at a loss for words. She’d never been this sharp with him before.
“I had no choice–everything’s been falling apart without you. Brianna was only supposed to help out temporarily, she was never going to replace you. No one could. Besides, she’s out of the company now. If you’re still jealous, you really don’t need to be.”
Ramona let out a soft, humorless laugh.
Still so stubborn, hal
“if I’m truly irreplaceable, then I suggest you reconsider my original offer. Give me the shares! deserve, and I’ll come back to sort out Holt Group’s mess… As far as I know, most of your projects have stalled. At this rate, forget about going public, everything you’ve built these past two years is about to go up in smoke.”
Her tone was as calm and melodious as ever, but every word carried a new, undeniable weight that

made Jotham feel as if he barely knew her. They’d only been apart for two weeks, but it was as if Ramona had become someone else entirely.
“Ramona, just tell me the truth, are you seeing someone else?” Jotham’s voice rose sharply just as she was about to end the call.
“What?”
“That morning, a man answered your phone. Who was he? I’ve always trusted you. Even when you insisted on taking time off during the busiest season, I didn’t say a word. I understood your stress, your outbursts… I’ve loved you, supported you, even took in Milo for your sake. Are you really going to betray me and the company over this? Ramona, you were never this kind of person before!”
Never this kind of person? She almost laughed. But the truth was, Jotham had never truly been a decent person at all.
Ramona’s anger flared, nearly getting the better of her, but she clenched her fists, took a steadying breath, and spoke evenly:
“Jotham, you were the one who relentlessly pursued me. I never begged to marry into your family. Milo was never good to me; you insisted on adopting him. As for what I deserve… I’ve managed Holt Group’s core business from the ground up, and I never took a cent from the company or your family. That fifty percent stake is rightfully mine. If I can’t get what I’ve earned, it’s perfectly normal for me to quit and join another firm. Just because we’re married doesn’t mean you get a free workhorse out of me, don’t you think?”
She deliberately emphasized “married,” exposing his hypocrisy without a hint of mercy.
Jotham, who’d been about to invoke their marriage as leverage, instantly fell silent.
“I want you back at the company because I worry about you getting taken advantage of out there. If you want the shares, fine, but you need to explain, just who was the man who answered your phone?”
Unable to win the argument, he clung to the mysterious “man” as his last defense.
“A man? I have no idea who you mean. Maybe a client? I’ve been meeting with a lot of them lately. Holt Group may have lost me, but my clients haven’t. No matter where I go, there are plenty of people eager for me to lead their projects.”
Ramona nearly laughed at how perfunctory her answer sounded, but she didn’t care.
Jotham was even more frustrated, but he had no proof and couldn’t afford to lose his temper. He could only grit his teeth. “Ramona, please stop making a scene. I don’t want these petty things to ruin what we have…”
They’d barely ever argued before. Jotham liked to think he’d always treated her well, always worked hard to keep their relationship intact.

Chapter 7B
Chapter
The scene closes, but its pressure does not. Something has shifted, and the next step will have to meet it. The feeling is unfinished on purpose.
Expect tighter tension and fewer safe options. Hidden truths may press forward. The path ahead should feel earned and a bit sharper.
Which choice will echo the longest? Who revealed the most by saying the least? How might today’s restraint become tomorrow’s turning point?
Rules, memory, and the setting frame each decision. Inside that frame, even small moves gain size. The chapter belongs to its world as much as to its people.
With this chapter done, the story steps forward—quieter, clearer, and ready to show what those choices mean.
