Chapter 770
Adrian suddenly realized that Wendy's behavior could only indicate one thing: she still cared about him.
Wendy stared at him as if he had lost his mind. We've been divorced for more than twenty years, not two. What makes him think I still care enough to be jealous over him?
Yes, she was angry.
She had already been angry on the way here, but her anger had nothing to do with the scene she had just walked in on.
"I..."
Wendy had barely opened her mouth when Adrian cut her off.
He seemed certain that she was upset because she still cared. In a hurry, he forced himself to explain with as much patience as he could manage.
"Wendy, there's really nothing going on between Pepper and me. She came over today to bring me soup, then accidentally burned herself. That's why she went into my lounge to put ointment on it.
"I only checked the burn because she's your sister and Gianna's mother. There's no way I'd ever get involved with your sister. Even if every woman in Oceaton vanished, I still wouldn't touch her."
Pepper had just stepped out of the lounge when those words hit her.
Even if every woman in Oceaton vanished, he still wouldn't touch me?
For a split second, the innocent, anxious look on her face almost cracked. Resentment flashed in her eyes. D*mn it. That wasn't how he acted in the lounge just now.
He was clearly starting to waver. If Wendy hadn't shown up out of nowhere and ruined everything, Adrian and I might already be in bed by now.
Wendy, this is all your fault.
You keep acting like there's nothing left between you and Adrian. You keep pretending you're above all this, yet the moment I finally get a real chance, you show up and destroy it.
Pepper quickly buried her hatred and hurried forward, her expression anxious. "Adrian, let me explain to Wendy."
"Yeah, explain it to her." Adrian looked as though he had grabbed a lifeline. He reached out and pulled Pepper closer.
The sudden tug made Pepper stumble, and she fell against him.
Before Adrian could push her away, she had already steadied herself.
"Wendy, I really did get burned. I was the one who asked Adrian to help me look at it. I..." Pepper rushed to explain, yet she looked nothing like an innocent victim at that moment.
Her hair was slightly messy. Every button on her blouse had been fastened, but the thin fabric still clung to her under the light, almost sheer. The silk did very little to hide her figure.
Together with the flush on her face, her appearance made her explanation sound even less convincing.
Yale bowed his head, unable to watch it.
Wendy clearly lost her patience as well.
She raised her hand to stop Pepper and said, "You don't need to explain anything to me. I've been divorced from him for 23 years. Forget about remarrying once.
"Even if he marries a third or fourth time, it's none of my business.
"If you both can make it work, that's great. You and Gianna could finally become a happy little family of three."
Pepper's eyes reddened
immediately. "Wendy, how can you
say that? Don't you believe us? Adrian has carried regret and guilt all these years there hasn't been any other woman around him, not even one. All he cares about is winning
one.
you back and making things right."
"Wendy, I witnessed everything firsthand. Even I was moved by him. You can't treat him unfairly like this..."
When Adrian heard Wendy practically bless him and Pepper as a couple, it felt as though someone had struck the back of his head with a club.
His mind rang.
Only after Pepper spoke did he find his voice again.
His tone came out hoarse.
"Wendy, I know you're upset, but you can't say things like that. Pepper is your sister. What are people going to think of her if this gets out?
"She's had a hard enough life as it is. Just because she's unmarried now doesn't mean she'll stay that way forever.
"I'm her former brother-in-law. I can't marry her. If anyone hears what you just said, her reputation will be dragged through the mud."
Wendy felt like she was talking to a wall. It was draining, and she was on the verge of losing her mind.
She stepped back to create distance from the two lunatics, fearing their madness might infect her.
Then, she looked at Pepper, who
stood with teary eyes, seeming hurt but still defending Adrian. "If he moves you so much and you think he's such a rare, wonderful man then time Marry him. Problem solved."
Wendy then turned to Adrian and added, "How many times do I need to repeat this? We are divorced and no longer legally connected. Pepper
is not your sister-in-t
ove
"Since you're worried about her reputation, marry her to fix everything. Also, stay far
away from me. Thank you."
Wendy felt she had made herself clear enough.
Then, she turned and left.
