The sudden mention of the pills made her choke.

"Cough, cough... yes," she managed, grabbing a napkin and looking at him, confused.

Her parents' pressure about having a baby had made her hypersensitive to anything

related to pregnancy.

But to Cedric, her flustered reaction looked like guilt.

"I have work to do tonight." he said.

He had forgotten to check if she was taking her pills the past few nights. But her period had just ended. It was her safe window. The chances of her getting pregnant were slim.

The moment he appeared, Liliana lost her appetite. She had been about to throw out the rest of the soup, but his words meant he wouldn't be sleeping in their room tonight.

"Okay," she said. She quickly finished her soup, washed the bowl, and went upstairs. She opened her laptop and began preparing for the AuraRun Design Contest. There were several categories-restaurants, retail spaces, apartments. Liliana chose apartment design. The first draft was due in ten days.

The floor plan of the Expo Manor apartment popped into her head.

It was the only place she had ever designed since graduating. A wave of conflicting emotions washed over her. She shook her head, pushing the memories away, and pulled up a popular modern floor plan to work on.

Tomorrow was Saturday, so she threw herself into her work, not going to bed until the early hours of the morning. She had planned to sleep and then visit the Forrest estate. But the doorbell began ringing incessantly, dragging her from a deep sleep. She had no choice but to go downstairs and answer it.

Vida stood on the doorstep, dressed in a stylish blue wool coat, her makeup perfectly applied. "Cedric is already at work. Why are you still sleeping?" she demanded, pushing past Liliana into the house.

Liliana shivered as a blast of cold air hit her. "If you're here about the checkup, you can leave right now."

Vida had already settled onto the sofa, her eyes darting around the villa. "Don't be so ungrateful. When married your father, the Preston family lived in a house just like this. And then... How can you not appreciate what you have? Every time Vida came here, her eyes lit up. This was one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Riverbend City, a symbol of status and wealth.

Liliana thought for a moment. "By that logic, marrying Cedric doesn't guarantee a

lifetime of luxury. The Forrest family could go bankrupt one day too."

"Don't you dare say that!" Vida shot to her feet. "You're determined to argue with me about everything now, aren't you?"

This was going nowhere. "I'm going upstairs to change," Liliana said, seeing another argument brewing have to go to the Forrest estate Make yourself at home. That was the only way to end this conversation quickly. Vida would never stop her from going to the family estate.

Vida followed her upstairs. "Buy plenty of food and drinks. Did your in-laws like the specialty foods your father brought back from his trip? If they did, he can get more next time."

Liliana went into the bathroom, the sound of her mother's voice making her rush through her morning routine.

In the bedroom, Vida tiptoed over to the bed. She opened the nightstand drawer

and, after a moment of searching, found a small pill bottle with foreign writing on it. She took a photo and did a quick search online.
