The Amazing son in law Chapter 1085
At that moment, Elaine had just finished her lunch and was busy instructing Charlie. He was hard at work, carrying an iron bucket and a shovel as he dug into the soil of the villa’s green lane.
For the past two days, Elaine had been feeling quite aimless. Stuck at home with her broken leg, she couldn’t go out to play and was growing increasingly bored. While scrolling through her social media, she noticed a female friend, someone she hadn’t interacted with much before, had purchased a villa in the suburbs.
This friend had even planted a variety of fruits and vegetables in her yard. When she shared photos of her flourishing garden, many people praised her, calling her smart and in tune with nature.
Seeing this made Elaine envious. On a whim, she declared her desire to grow her own vegetables and fruits in the yard of their villa.
However, with her broken leg, she couldn’t shovel the earth herself, so she had to enlist Charlie to do the work for her.
Initially, Charlie was reluctant to help. After all, he had previously confronted her, and if Elaine were to live in his villa in the future, she would need to treat him with respect. He wasn’t going to let her boss him around.
But when Claire, his wife, learned of her mother’s ambition to cultivate fruits and vegetables, she thought it would be a wonderful way for Elaine to connect with nature and lead a more wholesome life. Claire then stepped in to ask Charlie for his assistance.
This was the sole reason Charlie agreed to help.
In his view, encouraging Elaine to grow vegetables was better than having her concoct various schemes.
So, after finishing their meal, he assisted her in shoveling some soil at the villa and had already marked out a spot for her vegetable garden.
Elaine stood nearby with her crutch and reminded Charlie, “After digging up the loess, don’t forget to also dig up the black soil. It has a foul smell.”
Charlie nodded and continued digging, remaining silent.
After a moment of hesitation, Elaine cautiously approached Charlie with a request, “Charlie, may I discuss something with you?”
Noticing her humble demeanor, Charlie replied lightly, “Go ahead, I’m listening.”
With a smile, Elaine suggested, “When you have a chance, could you drive to the countryside and find some old farmers? I’d like you to buy some fruit trees and vegetables with the roots intact—just buy the whole tree.”
Charlie raised an eyebrow and replied, “Isn’t that unnecessary? If you want fruits and vegetables, we could just buy them at the supermarket. They even deliver.”
Elaine felt a pang of dissatisfaction with Charlie’s response but held back her frustration. She smiled and explained, “Mom wants you to buy the whole tree not just for eating. We can plant it directly in our yard and have a vegetable garden right away! If we start from seeds, it will take ages for them to grow.”
Charlie sighed, realizing his mother-in-law seemed eager to get this done, likely wanting to share her gardening success on social media as soon as possible.
Just as he was about to decline her request, Elaine hastily added, “My dear son-in-law, let me be honest. Claire has loved growing vegetables and fruits since she was a child. She used to drag me and her father along to pick fruits and vegetables. Whenever we visited other people’s gardens in the countryside, Claire was always reluctant to leave.”
Charlie eyed her with suspicion, asking, “When did this happen? I’ve never heard about this before.”
Elaine quickly responded, “That was long ago. Claire grew up, went to school, and worked. She didn’t have time for gardens anymore. I promise she really loved it as a child. She even wanted to plant vegetables at the Wilson family villa, but the old lady wouldn’t allow it.”
Charlie considered this for a moment. If Claire genuinely had a passion for it, he was willing to make arrangements.
He took out his cell phone and called Claire, asking, “Wife, since the weekend is almost here, would you like to go out and pick some fruits and vegetables?”
“Absolutely!” Claire responded excitedly. “That sounds perfect! Where are we going to pick them? How did you know I loved it?”
