Claire awoke around seven o’clock in the morning.

Upon hearing some stirring, Charlie quickly pretended to be asleep, lying still on the floor.

“Nonsense!” Elaine shouted, placing her hands on her hips. “I gave birth to you, so everything you do is my business! I won’t allow some worthless man to take advantage of my daughter!”

Claire shot back, “Mom! Charlie saved your life!”

Elaine, with one hand still on her hip, waved her other hand dismissively. “Don’t talk to me about that useless man! I’ve lived long enough to know that being heartless is the only way to survive!”

Then she added, “Claire, you need to be smart. The most valuable thing you have is your body! With your looks, you could easily marry a billionaire after divorcing Charlie! Our family would thrive!”

Frustrated, Claire flicked her quilt and declared, “I’m done arguing. I’m going to wash up now.”
