“I don’t know, Mom!” Christopher responded, his voice laced with anxiety. “That’s what Elaine said! She claimed it was all a setup, a scam to distract me while Hannah bought herself time to escape!”

“Your grandma has been asking me for the eight million dollars, but your mom didn’t want to give it to her. She suggested I transfer all the money into her account and tell your grandma that it was tied up in the fund management account. That’s why I transferred all our money to her—fifteen million, all of it!”

Upon hearing the amount, Lady Wilson’s eyes widened in disbelief. She slapped Christopher across the face and scolded, “Didn’t you say you only had ten million?!”

Christopher, taken aback by both the slap and the truth he had just revealed, felt a surge of frustration. Raising his voice, he retorted, “Mom! You’re the one who estimated I had ten million! I didn’t say it myself!”

Continuing with intensity, she added, “Your mom keeps talking about a scam, yet all her accomplices, including her, have disappeared, except for Elaine. There’s something very wrong with this picture!”

Harold suddenly blurted out an idea that had just struck him, “Could it be that Elaine is behind all this? What if she’s the one taking care of my mom and her accomplices?”

Lady Wilson scoffed in disgust, “Elaine? Do you really believe that dimwit could pull something like this off? Only your foolish uncle would fall for her tricks! I won’t get into your mother’s character right now, but she is ten times smarter than Elaine, that’s the truth! If she wanted to fool Elaine, there’s no way Elaine could retaliate!”
