Chapter 1103
Remington, however, completely brushed off Jerome's unfriendly tone, sounding remarkably patient.
"How is Mr. Madden holding up?"
On the other end of the line, Jerome was standing right next to Nelson Madden's hospital bed.
For the past two days, Nelson had been faking a severe illness and staying in the ICU.
As the grandson Nelson had raised, Jerome naturally hadn't left the hospital once.
After all, if they were going to put on a show, they had to go all the way.
The moment Remington called, Jerome had put it on speaker.
Hearing Remington ignore the bait and instead ask about his grandfather's health, Jerome felt a twinge of disappointment.
That cunning wolf was as cautious and alert as ever.
He had hoped Remington would snap back at his sarcastic tone so his grandfather could hear exactly what kind of jerk he was.
Just because Jerome had backed down didn't mean Remington was going to just waltz in and marry the Madden family's only heiress without a fight.
He secretly hoped Remington would have to cross eighty-eight hurdles just to get to her. Honestly, he'd be thrilled if Lizetta stayed with the Maddens until she was in her late thirties.
But to his surprise, Remington seemed to have eyes in the back of his head. Not only did he avoid the trap, but he also smoothly scored some brownie points.
Jerome almost turned the speaker off, but when he glanced at Nelson, the old man was sitting there rustling his newspaper. Far from reacting to Remington's concern, Nelson dramatically turned his back to the phone.
It was a slightly childish move.
A helpless smile touched Jerome's lips before he replied to Remington.
"He's been through it all; he takes things in stride. As long as you take good care of Liz, he'll be perfectly fine."
Publicly, they had created the illusion that the Madden family was in absolute chaos over Lizetta's accident.
It wasn't convenient for the
Maddens to send people to take over her care or bring her back to Tranquil Meadows. That meant
Remington got a free pass to stay by her side without any interference.
Nelson clearly felt the same way. With two loud rustles, he threw his newspaper
aside, no longer able to pretend he was reading.
He raised his voice and yelled.
"You Dashiell brat! Liz might be
relying on your care right now, but it's only temporary! Know your boundaries and don't get any funny ideas! If you do, I'll come down t
Zion City and break your legs!"
Remington wasn't surprised in the least to hear the old man's voice.
Even though Nelson didn't spell it out, Remington knew exactly what he meant.
Nelson was warning him not to try anything underhanded—like getting Lizetta pregnant to force their hand into a quick marriage.
Truth be told, Remington dreamed of being a father again, of Liz carrying their baby.
But he had put her through enough misery in the past. He would never resort to something like that this time.
His voice softened as he replied to the old man.
"Hearing Grandpa Nelson sound so full of energy puts my mind at ease. When I tell
Liz, she'll be thrilled and relieved too."
Nelson scoffed, completely unappreciative.
"Don't try to change the subject! You heard what I said, right?"
Remington then said, "Don't worry, Grandpa Nelson. I promise the things you're worried about won't happen.
I owe Liz so much from the past.
This time, from pursuing her, to dating to proposing, and finally getting married, I want to make up y for every single regret we've ever had."
Nelson seemed somewhat satisfied with this answer. He nodded. "As long as you
know..."
