Laurie felt a pang in her heart upon witnessing the close bond between Janice and Nina.
It was as though something precious to her had been claimed by someone else, filling her with a profound sense of loss. Nina looked over with a dismissive air. “Yes, indeed, just a couple of fools.”
“Mrs. Green, don’t you think that’s rather harsh?” Laurie asked, her expression serious. “The Edwards family might not match the prestige of the Green family, but we remain one of the four distinguished families.”
“One of the four distinguished families?” Nina repeated without even facing Laurie, nonchalantly flicking away a speck from her shoulder. “Who do you think you are? Would you even have a place among the four great families if the Patterson family hadn’t mismanaged things over the years, giving the Edwards family the chance to take advantage?”
Nina tilted her head back slightly, her presence dominating Laurie. “Mark my words, the existence of four great families depends on my mood. If I decide otherwise, then only the Green family will stand.”

Delilah was still acting innocent and aggrieved, but deep down, she was overcome with jealousy. This commanding and protective mother-in-law should have been hers. If only Aiden hadn’t been disabled. Even so, now that she had witnessed how fierce Nina was in defending her family, Delilah was starting to think that marrying a cripple might not be so bad.
