Chapter 255:

Alcott’s smile crumbled like a sandcastle at high tide. “Nina, you’ve got it all wrong! The company matters kept me longer than expected.”

Nina’s frown deepened. “What are you up to?”

Alcott’s expression softened. “It’s been far too long since we’ve had time just for us. I want to take a few days off, whisk you away somewhere abroad.”

“Travel abroad?” Nina’s eyes widened, disbelief dancing in their depths. “Have you changed your mind? Every time I’ve mentioned traveling, you’ve buried yourself deeper in work.”

Alcott’s tender expression wavered, replaced by an awkward grin as he rubbed the back of his neck. “I suppose guilt finally caught up with me after all those times I’ve disappointed you. This time, I’m putting us first, work second. Remember how you mentioned wanting to visit Aerith? Well, I’ve already secured our tickets and booked our accommodation. We could leave as soon as tomorrow.”

Alcott turned to look at Aiden. “This is strictly a romantic getaway for your mother and me. You’re not coming with us.”

A frost-laden chuckle escaped Aiden’s lips, but he held his tongue.

Nina found herself caught in a whirlwind of disbelief. The idea of Alcott willingly setting aside his precious work commitments seemed as unlikely as snow in summer. Yet there he stood, his expression bearing no trace of jest.

“You’re absolutely certain about this?” Nina probed, suspicion furrowing her brow. “The shareholders’ meeting is just around the corner. If you leave with me now…”

Her voice trailed off as her gaze drifted back to Aiden, and suddenly, pieces began clicking into place. “This wouldn’t be some elaborate scheme of yours, would it?”

Alcott’s hands flew up in protest. “How could you think such a thing? My only intention is to make amends for lost time. Besides, now that Aiden’s married, he’s eligible to receive my father’s shares at the shareholders’ meeting.”

His gaze grew distant, weighted with years of unspoken struggles. “I admit, I once harbored selfish ambitions, desperately trying to prove my worth. But after years of striving, I’ve finally accepted that I cannot change my father’s decision. It’s time to let go.”

Alcott’s eyes found Aiden, filled with a storm of conflicting emotions. “Whatever our past differences, Aiden remains my son. Passing Green Group into his hands is the right thing.”

“Only now you’ve realized this?” Nina rolled her eyes, her irritation plain as day. “I never understood why you were butting heads with your son to begin with. As far as I’m concerned, as long as someone strengthens the Green family, it doesn’t matter who’s calling the shots. Besides, I trust your father’s instincts.”

Her words carried weight, and with her power to veto, it was crystal clear she’d stand by her son.

“Yes, yes!” Alcott replied eagerly. “So, how about taking a trip abroad with me? Think of it as my way of making amends.”

“Nina, I really think you’ve done more than enough for this family. You deserve a breather,” Janice interjected, walking over to take Nina’s hand in hers. “Things have settled down now; there’s no need for you to stress anymore.”
