Chapter 44:

Despite their wealth and influence, the Edwards family was being toyed with by such a useless and incompetent person. It was truly a wonder they even got as far as they had.

“Please continue leading the way,” Janice told the receptionist, cutting her encounter with Delilah short.

Delilah watched them go, her anger surging in her chest. Then her lips curled into a malicious smile. She quickly stepped forward and aimed a kick at Janice’s heel.

Unfortunately for her, Janice saw it coming. She dodged just as Delilah was bringing her foot down.

But in the next second, Janice let out a surprised yelp and stumbled forward.

Delilah froze in shock and confusion. She hadn’t actually stepped on Janice, so why did she fall?

Delilah was still in a daze when a man emerged from a nearby room.

Janice fell right into his arms, and he instinctively reached out to catch her.

“Oh, I’m so sorry!” Janice scrambled back to her feet and bowed her head in apology. “I didn’t mean to crash into you.”

“We meet again,” a cool voice said from somewhere above her. Janice looked up to find a familiar, handsome face. “Mr. Delgado!”

“Janice! Oh, my goodness, are you all right?” Delilah finally snapped back to her senses. She rushed forward and acted all innocent as she usually would. “I’m sorry, it’s all my fault. I was walking too fast and accidentally stepped on your foot!” She had perfected the look of guilt—red, teary eyes and pouting lips—and she did not hesitate to use it to its full extent in order to garner sympathy.

Deep down, however, she was anxious.

Why did it have to be Kenneth, of all people? Had he seen her try to trip Janice?

Just then, she caught the sly glance Janice threw her way. Janice had stumbled on purpose. She had likely seen Kenneth about to walk through the door and pretended to fall to get close to him.

Was this woman trying to bag both Aiden and Kenneth?

Janice noticed the traces of frustration in Delilah’s expression and took immense delight in it. She had just given Delilah a taste of her own medicine and outmaneuvered her in her own game.

“It’s my fault, Kenneth. My carelessness caused my sister to fall,” Delilah plowed ahead, biting back her anger to maintain her innocent act. Kenneth’s gaze softened, which gave her hope that her performance had worked.

“You’re Lowell’s sister, Delilah?” he asked.

“Yes!” Delilah replied earnestly. Upon closer inspection, she noticed that Kenneth’s face was blank, almost indifferent. She felt a ripple of unease. “By the way, Lowell asked me to give you his regards. Oh, and this is a gift I prepared for you.” She took an exquisitely wrapped box from her purse and offered it to him with both hands.

Kenneth glanced at it briefly and made no move to take it. “That’s not necessary. I’m one of the interviewers for today. Accepting your gift would be highly inappropriate.”

“Huh?” Delilah’s face fell in disappointment as she reluctantly put the box away.

Kenneth’s brows furrowed at her reaction. “You may give it to me after the interview.”

Delilah’s eyes instantly lit up. “Really? Thank you, Kenneth.”
