Chapter 15

The door had barely shut when I ran into my mom.

She looked worn–out, carrying a takeout box in her hand.

The second she saw me, her eyes burned with rage.

Spit flying, she jabbed her finger at me, screaming:

“Bitch, what the hell are you doing here?!”

“Even if you got down on your knees and begged, me and Lila would never forgive you!”

Apologize?

She’s dreaming.

I gave her a little smirk.

“Mom, I’m here for a reason. The cremation storage place called me.”

She snorted and looked away.

I smiled sweet as honey.

“They said Brayden’s holding period was up. We need to pick up his ashes.”

“You know I lost my job and I’m broke. Can’t exactly afford a cemetery plot.”

“And you’re too busy babying Lila, so… I scattered Brayden’s ashes.”

The takeout box crashed to the floor.

Mom’s mouth dropped open in shock. “You… you said what?”

I repeated myself gently, word for word.

“I said I scattered Brayden’s ashes.”

“On the way here, I dumped them in that nasty drainage ditch a couple blocks away.”

“Maybe you’ve even walked over the spot where he’s buried now.”

I pulled out my phone and swiped open my photo gallery.

“Thought you wouldn’t believe me, so I took pictures. Look–his name’s still on the urn.”

I let out a long sigh, almost sounding kind,

“Sure, it’s a stinking ditch, but hey–it’s still a resting place.”

“At least I got my little brother settled somewhere, Guess I’m not such a failure as a big sister.”

Mom’s face twisted in fury as she lurched at me, but her knees buckled and she collapsed on the concrete.

For a long moment she just sat there, stunned.

Then it hit her.

Her son’s ashes, dumped in a filthy drainage ditch.

Chapter 15

She clutched her mouth, sobbing uncontrollably.

The sound was raw, guttural.

“Brayden! Oh my God, my Brayden! Mommy’s so sorry…”

“My baby boy–1”

I stared at her coldly, watching her grief.

A bitter laugh in my chest.

So she can cry after all.

Funny… last time it was me who died, and she didn’t shed a single tear.
