Chapter 477
116 - Ben
I know I am not the one with magic, and frankly, I'm over it. But, it would be nice to be useful – to have some kind of magical abilities right now. Jax, Dev and I have been pacing for a very long time. I can see Elara and Eliza. They are only a few yards away from us, but we are on one side of a wall with them on the other. We aren't able to get their attention and after way too much gesturing, the three of us walk the length of the wall together, only to be stopped by the edge of the Rift barrier. We can't leave to get help. We are useless to Elara like this. Watching is torture. I see both women in this hazy gold light. I don't know if the view is the same for the guys-we can't f*cking talk to each other. I press my hands against the wall of magic keeping me from my mate. The cold I feel on the tips of my fingers ripples up my arms and slows my breathing and anxiety.
"I know you are trying to help me, but the best thing for me right now would be to have contact with my mate and my wolf." The energy feels familiar somehow. I've never had contact with magic, though, so I don't know what the feeling really is. It could be Eliza playing tricks. Oww! I jump, looking around. There isn't anyone else around me. Jax and Dev are still walking the rest of the wall's length.
“Did you just pinch my arm?!" I really look at the wall for the first time and I swear I see it glint. “Did you just wink at me – after pinching me?" Great, now I have a bodiless magical being with a twisted sense of humor. "Can you talk to me? Can you give me the ability to talk to Jax and Dev? My wolf? Anyone? What are we supposed to be doing? You had me pinned to the ground smacking my brain with images that don't make any sense. You let me go to my mate for two seconds then put me here. What is the point of all of this?" I slam my fists against the translucent wall. An invisible hand grabs my chin and moves it to look at my mate. My beautiful mate is walking towards the person threatening our pack with pink sparks jumping lazily from her fingers.
I watch her in awe until I am tossed to the side and a bright white flash blinds me. My whole head feels like it is under water. I can't breathe, I can't hear anything and the only color my eyes register is a hazy white. Then everything hits me at once. My lungs force a gulp of air in; the sounds of shouting are all around me. My body is numb, slow and fuzzy.
"Hey! Ben! Look at me man. Hey!" Several slaps to my face help me focus on Jax. "F*ck, am I glad to talk to you. Are you hurt?" He starts patting my arms and looking me over. I still can't move well.
"What the hell just blasted us?" I grab his wrist and use him to pull myself to a wobbly sitting position.
“Juliette, I think.” I look around and there are wolves and witches everywhere. "I don't see her. Where's Jason?"
He pulls me all the way to my feet, turns me and points. "Doing the same thing we were a few minutes ago, but now we can talk to each other."
I see one of my best friends pacing the magical wall keeping my mate locked in with Eliza. I tilt my head and Jax helps me walk to him.
"What the f*ck, man? Why can't we get in there with them?" He looks at me, eyes bloodshot and wild.
"The magic thinks it should be a girls
only party. At least the silencing
spell, or whatever that was is broken. But, we should be on the lookout for Eliza's werves. If you guys got m then they might be able to as well. How did you know to come here?"
He shrugs. “Juliette said we have to go now and took off. I just followed her here. She ran straight through this magic wall. I am apparently not good enough to be on the inside." He huffs sardonically.
Dev pats him on the shoulder. "None of us are. Have you looked around? We are all on the outside. This Rift has an agenda. I don't see Marietta or Brianna. They are the only people we can't account for right now."
"That doesn't mean they aren't here
though. I have a feeling the Rift
shows us what it wants us to see. We were knocked out for a bit when came through the tree line. I
we firs
saw a bunch of people, I assume witches, dancing around a fire. Maybe a ritual of some kind. Then spells flying everywhere." Jax walks up with three more warriors in tow.
"Can any of you talk to your wolves yet?" I ask, "Mine is still quiet."
"You don't have your wolf!?" Jason shouts. "I can hear mine, but he says we can't shift in here."
I look between Jax and Dev. Their faces tell me they have the same situation. Why is mine gone?

“Dude, relax. It's probably because of your connection to Elara.” Dev tries reasoning with me. I'm sure my face is having a full conversation with him. Copyright Miss L Writes and Ember Mantel Productions
"What about Jason?!" I shout, "I need my wolf if we are going to fight our way out of here."
isn't a wolf and the
"Jason's mate is
Alpha of this pack. Now, get ready to keep your ass alive. Elara will kill all of us if you die unprotected and lam not interested in that outcome. Dev pushes me behind him and the demotion grates off my nerves, but can't do anything about it?
I feel the rumble in the earth around my feet here they come.
