"Lori has no other family in this world. I should be the one thanking you for loving her so much."

"No thanks necessary," Maynard said, raising an eyebrow at Briony. "I'd much rather you offer yourself up instead."

Briony had become immune to his habit of spouting nonsense at every opportunity.

She just smiled and changed the subject. "I'm heading out of the country the day after tomorrow. If you want to take Lori over to your parents' place, make sure Carol goes with you."

"Got it." Maynard paused. "Why are you going abroad?"

"Star is studying overseas. I'm worried about her, so I'm going to check in."

Maynard knew that Stella Joyner and Briony were as close as sisters.

He nodded. "I understand. Don't worry about anything here. I'll handle Starlight Entertainment and the three kids."

"Nina and Mario will probably go to Stewart Wentworth's for the weekend, and Lori has Carol, so I'm not worried at all. You just focus on your own work. You don't need to worry about me."

Maynard was speechless.

The woman was keeping her defenses up, drawing a clear line between them with every word.

And yet, her expression was gentle, her demeanor soft.
