Chapter 13
Chapter 13:
On that lazy Sunday, Fernanda hadn’t gotten up early. She lingered in the comforting embrace of her bed until nearly noon before finally heading downstairs for lunch.
In the dining room, her family had already gathered.
Erika, rolling her eyes dramatically with a smirk tugging at her lips, scoffed, “Seriously, Fernanda? Sleeping until noon? Aren’t you embarrassed?”
Since her underhanded scheme against Fernanda had failed, Erika had avoided direct confrontations, but her bitterness still lingered in the air—something Fernanda was well aware of. Still, Fernanda remained unfazed. Let Erika stew in her own spite; it would only sour her, not Fernanda.
“I got caught up reading last night, which is why I woke up so late today,” Fernanda replied as she took the seat next to Robert. “Besides, isn’t tonight the Harper family gathering? I’ve never met them before, so I want to be fully rested to make the best impression possible.”
Robert gave her an encouraging nod. “Absolutely.”
Beyond these walls, Fernanda carried the Morgan name—a symbol of grace and charm. Who wouldn’t want their representative to embody those qualities?
“Reading, really?” Erika sneered, her disbelief poorly concealed. “And you think that’ll get you into Esaham University? Don’t make me laugh!”
Before Fernanda could reply, Robert intervened with a firm voice, “Erika! That’s enough. Instead of belittling your sister, you should be supporting her. Your negativity isn’t welcome here.”
Erika’s irritation was clear as she stabbed her fork into her meal, her eyes narrowing in silent contempt.
She doubted Fernanda would be admitted to Esaham University. After scouring the internet for any justification for allowing Fernanda to take the exam and finding none, Erika’s suspicions only grew. The only explanation she could imagine was some kind of deception.
As a result, Erika was determined to peel away the facade and reveal Fernanda’s true nature.
Originally, Erika had believed that Fernanda’s arrival would have little effect on the household dynamics, thinking it would simply mean preparing an extra meal. However, it soon became clear that Fernanda was encroaching on more than just physical space—she was threatening Erika’s cherished position as the beloved daughter. Determined to defend her place, Erika steeled herself against this so-called country bumpkin.
“Fernanda, don’t wear yourself out studying for the exam,” Robert advised gently, concern evident in his tone. “It’s important to take care of yourself too.”
“Understood,” Fernanda replied curtly.
“And remember, if you need any resources or support for your preparation, don’t hesitate to ask,” Robert continued, his gaze intensifying as he peered over the rim of his elegant glasses. “Make yourself completely at home here. There’s no need to get up early—just be sure to stay rested.”
Robert’s attention was now fully focused on Fernanda, viewing her potential university placement as a way to elevate the family’s social standing. Her success would not only fill him with paternal pride but also provide a strategic advantage in negotiating more favorable terms with the prestigious Harper family.
Given his company’s precarious financial state, Robert regarded Fernanda as an invaluable asset—a potential source of fresh investment, advanced technologies, and much-needed capital. In his eyes, Fernanda was a treasure waiting to be discovered.
That afternoon, Michelle took it upon herself to present Fernanda with a gift: a pristine gown nestled in an elegant box.
“Fernanda, this was chosen especially for you. I hope you like it,” she said as she handed over the gift.
Inside was a white gown, adorned with intricate gardenia embroidery. Its understated elegance suited Fernanda’s serene and poised nature perfectly.
Meanwhile, lurking behind Michelle, Erika wore a secretive smirk. She had learned from Bobby that the Harper family dinner that evening would be attended by numerous distinguished families and their daughters.
The dress Michelle had chosen, although charming, belonged to a past fashion season. At a gathering filled with fashion enthusiasts, the gown was sure to make Fernanda the object of ridicule. Erika delighted in imagining Fernanda as the target of whispered taunts and sharp remarks, her satisfaction growing by the minute.
“It’s quite lovely,” Fernanda said, her tone casual. “I’ll wear it.”
Erika’s sense of triumph only intensified. Clearly, Fernanda had no real understanding of fashion. Her appreciation was limited to the dress’s aesthetic charm, with no regard for its place in current trends. How utterly pitiable.
Although the gown was from a renowned designer, Erika had handed it down to Fernanda simply because it no longer appealed to her. After all, what other reason could there be for a country girl like Fernanda, with such humble beginnings, to possess a dress this lavish?
Noticing Michelle’s expectant look, Erika stepped forward, her voice syrupy sweet. “Fernanda, I noticed you didn’t bring much makeup with you. Let me do your makeup this afternoon, will you?”
Fernanda arched an eyebrow, surprised by Erika’s sudden change in attitude.
“I’ve been a bit impulsive these last few days, saying things I shouldn’t have,” Erika said with an apologetic tone. “I know I’ve hurt your feelings. Let me make it up to you by helping you get ready for tonight.”
Without missing a beat, Michelle chimed in, “That’s wonderful. Fernanda is already beautiful, but with your help, she’ll shine even more. Go on and help her prepare.”
Fernanda regarded the mother and daughter with a measured look. She knew that if something seemed too good to be true, it usually was.
Yet her response revealed nothing. With a faint smile, she murmured, “Sure.”
She slipped into the gown Michelle had chosen. Erika styled Fernanda’s hair in loose waves and applied bold makeup to her face. Then she adorned Fernanda with an elaborate set of pearl jewelry.
The combination of the voluminous gown, flowing hair, and dramatic makeup made Fernanda’s appearance somewhat cumbersome and overstated. The shiny pearl accessories only heightened the effect, casting Fernanda as a flamboyant heiress.
Erika assessed her handiwork in the mirror and nodded approvingly. “Look at you, Fernanda! Absolutely stunning. This style really brings out your best features.”
Assuming Fernanda’s bare face was due to a lack of cosmetic experience, Erika had taken it upon herself to give a lesson through application.
Fernanda tilted her head slightly, a gentle smile on her lips. “It’s absolutely lovely. Thank you.”
Barely suppressing her amusement, Erika checked the time and announced, “We should be on our way. Let’s head to the Harpers’ house.”
Fernanda rose gracefully and followed Erika down the stairs. The moment Amber caught sight of Fernanda, her lips trembled with restrained emotion.
Erika had expertly hidden Fernanda’s natural elegance, disguising it behind the gaudy appearance of a desperate social climber.
Amber eagerly anticipated the reaction of the guests at the Harper family’s gathering. Fernanda was sure to attract attention, but only as a target of ridicule and humiliation.
