“What could I possibly do? She’s the general manager,” Rosita said, clasping her hands together on the desk and regarding Waldo with an icy stare. “You’re the one who chose to challenge her. Now tell me, who’s going to help you?”
“Do you seriously want me gone?” Waldo shouted, jabbing a finger toward the door. “You know how valuable I am! If I leave, this company will take a massive hit. Where else are you going to find someone with my expertise?”
His arrogance and overinflated ego were on full display. At that moment, Rosita realized why so many employees had grumbled about Waldo—his arrogance was insufferable.
“Telling me all this is useless. I’m just the editor-in-chief, and she’s the general manager,” Rosita said with a shrug. “My advice? Pack your things and leave as she told you to. Otherwise, you’re only setting yourself up for more humiliation.”
“What’s that supposed to mean? Are you seriously just going to let her fire me? She’s being completely unreasonable, and you’re okay with it?” Waldo exclaimed.
“Perhaps her actions aren’t as impulsive as they seem,” Rosita remarked, sliding a few documents across the desk toward Waldo. “This is all tied to you, isn’t it? Care to dispute it?” Waldo’s eyes narrowed as he stared at the papers.
There was no mistaking it—it was all about him. Every word brought back a flood of memories of his actions.
“A lot of employees are unhappy with you, and here’s the evidence. Fernanda showed me this earlier today. Even if I wanted to defend you, I wouldn’t know where to begin. And let’s not forget—you ignored her orders. She’s only been in charge for a day, and you’ve already challenged her. No wonder you got fired.”
“Her directives were flawed! Why should I comply with them?” Waldo argued, unwilling to see any fault in his behavior. “Everything I do is for the company’s benefit. What’s so wrong with that?”
Rosita let out a frustrated sigh, shaking her head. “Even if you have the company’s best interests in mind, you still need to respect the chain of command. She explicitly told you not to do it, and yet you went ahead anyway. Why don’t you just take over the company? Then you can make all the decisions you want without answering to anyone.”
“I didn’t do anything wrong! Why should I be the one to get fired? Everyone else writes the news the same way!” Waldo’s agitation was palpable; his face had turned a deep shade of red, and his hands moved frantically in the air, as though he were trying to piece together a defense out of thin air.
