Chapter 257:

Wendy chuckled, her earlier worries dissolving.

Riding with someone who understood your excitement was a rare kind of joy.

After another stretch of cruising, they stopped at a cozy restaurant for lunch. As they shared stories over their meal, Fernanda’s phone buzzed.

“Hello, Miss Morgan. This is Hamilton Clifford from the PR team,” the voice on the other end said. “Could you swing by the office this afternoon? We’ve hit a snag with the promotional plans and need your input.”

“Of course. I’ll be there by four,” Fernanda replied smoothly.

“Perfect,” Hamilton said. “Oh, and avoid Triumph Avenue. A pipeline rupture’s caused a major block. Take Birch Road instead.”

Triumph Avenue, the main road leading to Bright Lights Media’s office, was the usual choice for commuters. In contrast, Birch Road was a steep, narrow side street that hardly anyone used.

With the main avenue blocked today, taking the side road was the only option.

After Fernanda hung up, Wendy teased, “Busy as always, aren’t you?”

“Yeah, yeah. Career-driven, remember?” Fernanda shot her a playful wink.

“Clearly.” Wendy gave her a thumbs-up. “You’re the most capable nineteen-year-old I’ve ever met.”

“Appreciate it.”

Despite the four-year age gap, Wendy felt no barriers between them. Fernanda’s experiences and maturity transcended her years, creating a bond that felt effortless.

After dinner, they rode back to Central Park for one last whirl on their bikes.

At 3:30, Fernanda checked her watch and stood. “Time for me to head out. Shall we call it a day?”

“Sounds good. I’m ready for a shower and some rest,” Wendy said with a yawn.

“You can drop off your bike now. I’ll return mine later tonight,” Fernanda said. “I’ll ride straight to the office to save time.”

“Be careful,” Wendy called as Fernanda fastened her helmet and revved her engine, speeding away into the distance.

Wendy returned to the dorm building, her good mood fading as she spotted Bobby crouched under a tree, cigarette smoke curling around him.

As soon as Bobby caught sight of her, he shot to his feet, his expression like that of a scolded puppy.

Wendy brushed past him, her strides long and deliberate.

Desperate, Bobby darted in front of her, his tone pitiful. “Wendy, I messed up. Please, stop being mad at me.”

“I’m not angry anymore.” Her voice was void of warmth as she avoided looking at him. “But if you disappeared from my sight this second, that’d be fantastic.”

Bobby, flustered, shifted topics. “Did you finish riding? Everything went okay, right?”

Wendy scoffed. “Are you trying to jinx me?”
