Chapter 262
Chapter 262:
“As you can see, I’m fine,” Fernanda replied, her tone steady.
Hamilton exhaled in relief but couldn’t suppress his curiosity. “Why do you think it was Waldo?”
“The ambush wasn’t random,” Fernanda explained. “They knew I would be coming to the company this afternoon. Only those attending this meeting had that information. I don’t have any personal grievances with anyone here, so Waldo is the only one who comes to mind.”
Hamilton nodded, Fernanda’s reasoning starting to make sense.
If Waldo was behind it, his actions were beyond petty. Being fired for failing to follow instructions was his own fault; holding a grudge was uncalled for.
Unwilling to hide anything, Hamilton revealed what he knew. “Waldo called me this afternoon. He asked me to join him for drinks, but I said I couldn’t because of the meeting. He wanted to know who the meeting was with, so I told him it was with you. He even pressed for the exact time. I couldn’t help but wonder why he seemed so interested in the meeting, especially since he wasn’t part of the company anymore. I assumed he was just being curious, so I didn’t think much of it.”
Fernanda’s eyes narrowed slightly as the pieces of the puzzle fell into place.
It was almost certain that Waldo had orchestrated the attack.
She planned to dig deeper, and if it did turn out to be Waldo… Well, she wouldn’t let him go unpunished.
Waldo was stretched out on his couch, his eyelids flickering nonstop. He couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease that had taken hold since the afternoon, as if something sinister loomed on the horizon.
The intense mental strain kept Waldo on the move; he couldn’t sit still, pacing back and forth from his bedroom to the living room, then to his study, his thoughts swirling with anxiety.
Waldo murmured, “I was careful not to show my face when I paid off those guys, and there’s no way they could trace it back to me. And Fernanda? She won’t figure anything out either.”
He had used a disposable phone for the operation, confident that it couldn’t be linked back to him. This realization slightly eased his nerves.

“But why hasn’t there been a callback yet?” Waldo muttered to himself, growing more anxious. “They promised to contact me once the job was done.”
He glanced at the clock; it was now well past 7 p.m. The window he had arranged with those involved had expired hours ago. By this time, all should have been executed according to his plan. Lost in these thoughts, Waldo was startled by the sudden vibration of the phone beside him.
His heart dropped, then thudded violently. He pressed a hand against his chest, checking the caller ID. It was Hamilton.
Waldo answered the phone, and Hamilton’s relaxed tone filtered through. “Hey, good news! No overtime for me tonight! Remember you mentioned grabbing some drinks? Let’s head out now!”
Waldo swallowed, struggling to keep his voice calm. “Really? How did you manage to get off work all of a sudden?”
