Chapter 290:

“We could have just shared a room tonight,” Wendy commented. “Was it necessary to take such a risk?”

Earlier in the living room, Fernanda had quietly shared something with Wendy that she had found difficult to accept.

“If you stayed with me tonight and his scheme failed, do you think Rafael wouldn’t try again?” Fernanda spoke with a calm, insightful tone. “It’s better to establish my stance now, while he’s still underestimating me.”

“Are you certain?” Wendy asked. “Might you be overthinking this? I can’t imagine he would dare. After all, this villa is owned by the Norris family, and he’s friends with Jeff. If something were to happen to you here, wouldn’t Jeff and his sister be blamed? He wouldn’t risk harming his own friends.”

“Rafael is closer to Ava,” Fernanda responded coldly. “I discovered his connection to Ava during my investigation. He’s quite fond of her and treats her well, although he doesn’t make a show of his feelings, so it’s not widely known.”

“But doesn’t Ava have feelings for Bobby?” Wendy asked, her brow furrowing in confusion. “If Ava is interested in someone else, why would Rafael continue pursuing her?”

Fernanda gave Wendy a knowing look and raised an eyebrow. “Bobby has feelings for you, doesn’t he? And he is still officially engaged to me. But Ava hasn’t stopped pursuing him. Feelings are hard to control.”

Wendy visibly tensed.

The mention of Bobby in the same breath as her always stirred discomfort.

Seeking to steer away from the topic, she warned, “Just be cautious, okay? Add me as your emergency contact. I’m right next door and will rush over if you need me.”

“Alright,” Fernanda said with a nod. “I hope I’m just reading too much into this.” She longed for a weekend without complications.

Despite that, the crate of alcohol, the man who brought it, and the dice game where it always seemed like the odds were stacked against her left her feeling uneasy.

After they turned off the faucet, Fernanda settled onto the bed just as Wendy was leaving the room.

Upon seeing the gathering outside the room, Wendy paused, taken aback. “What’s happening? Why is everyone here?”

“Is everything alright?” Sloane looked into the room with concern. “We’ve been knocking for a while without an answer. It worried me.” Wendy exited the room, carefully closing the door behind her.

From his position, Rafael glimpsed Fernanda motionless on the bed, appearing to be sound asleep.

“She’s okay. She just needed to vomit,” Wendy explained. “Thankfully, she’s feeling better now that it’s out of her system.”

Feeling a wave of remorse, Rafael said, “This is my fault. I brought too much alcohol.”

“It’s okay, you were just trying to ensure everyone enjoyed themselves,” Sloane comforted him, unaware of his hidden agenda. “Fernanda didn’t drink excessively. Some rest will do her good, and she won’t hold this against you.”

Rafael responded with a nod, his expression still filled with regret.
