The girl’s cheeks flushed with gratitude. She nodded quickly and thanked them over and over.

Once the woman who had caused the disturbance was ushered out, the restaurant settled back into its usual calm. Most diners carried on without comment, and a few cast sympathetic glances in the girl’s direction.
“That was awful!” Sloane fumed, stabbing her salad with more force than necessary. “How could that woman give a girl like her such a hard time? It’s already hard enough for her to come out and enjoy a meal with everything she deals with. And then she treats her like that? It’s just cruel!”
Sloane had a soft heart. Seeing the vulnerable endure mistreatment tugged at her deeply. She shuddered to imagine what could have happened if Vinson hadn’t been there.

As she turned, Fernanda caught a fleeting glimpse of her face. Her skin was pale, suggesting she had spent little time in the sun. Blue veins faintly traced her neck, adding to her delicate appearance. She wore oversized sunglasses that hid most of her features.
With one hand gripping her guide dog’s harness, she moved toward the door, guided by the same waiter who had helped her earlier.
