Chapter 477
Chapter 477:
Fernanda’s expression faltered, her eyes glossing over as she bit back a swell of poignant sorrow.
In the quaint village of her youth, Fernanda shared a home with Hiram, surrounded predominantly by the elderly. Not far away, Darrell Gibson’s cozy house nestled among the rest.
Darrell, the local tailor, was a familiar figure, often seen adjusting garments for the villagers.
Fernanda knew that Darrell’s prowess with a needle extended beyond mere alterations; his expertise in crafting exquisite formal dresses had been honed over generations.
Despite his skill, the village’s simple lifestyle and the rustic occupation of most of its women as farmers meant there was little call for such finery.
To cope with the scant demand, the inventory of formal dresses in Darrell’s possession steadily decreased. On her visits home, Fernanda would often spot Darrell perched on a stone stool by his doorstep, poring over an aged booklet filled with sketches of formal dresses. Recognized by the elders as a well-mannered and thoughtful girl, Fernanda was much beloved in the village. Darrell would affectionately tousle her pigtails and declare with a warm smile, “My dear, I can’t wait for you to grow up. Once you do, all the elegant formal dresses will be yours.”
To young Fernanda, these formal dresses were nothing short of magnificent, and she found herself yearning to grow up sooner. Yet, before she could mature into them, Darrell’s family was compelled to relocate.
Hiram explained that Darrell could no longer stand by as the art of traditional dressmaking dwindled into oblivion. Such a culturally rich craft merited preservation.
Unfortunately, their small village offered no future for such ambitions. Relocation to a larger city was imperative to sustain and celebrate their ancestral craft.
The day she bid farewell to Darrell, Fernanda exclaimed with a beaming smile, “Darrell, when I’m older, I’ll find you. I’ll surely promote the elegance of formal dresses!”
Darrell and his family couldn’t help but laugh warmly, their eyes brimming with fondness as they watched her.
Darrell chuckled heartily, “I’ll be waiting, Fernanda. Together, we’ll make it happen!”
Even the youthful Jalen chimed in, his tone reflective, “For a young girl to be so determined, there’s definitely hope ahead!”
In that instant, Fernanda caught a gleam of promise in Darrell’s gaze.
Time passed after Darrell and his family departed, and it was quite a while before she received any word from him. The letter she eventually got included their new address in Esaham, inviting her and Hiram to visit whenever they found themselves in the area.
Fernanda etched that address into her memory.
The years slipped away, and it wasn’t until now that she found the opportunity to visit.
As she reminisced, Fernanda shared these poignant memories with Bobby.
