Chapter 593
Chapter 593:
He quickly faced Fernanda, clearly expecting her to shed some light on the situation.
It didn’t add up. Weren’t Fernanda and Bobby close lately? They seemed nearly inseparable. What made Bobby declare he didn’t like her all of a sudden?
There had to be some misunderstanding.
Robert was baffled and looked to Fernanda for answers. But Fernanda, feeling Robert’s intense gaze, kept her head down and remained silent.
“You are out of your mind!” Curran continued to berate Bobby. “Such an excellent wife she’d make, one in a million, and you say you won’t marry her? You’re really pushing it… I’m going to give you a piece of my mind!”
With that, Curran lifted his cane again.
Bobby quickly caught the other end of the cane, his eyes pleading with Curran. “Grandpa, I’m your grandson. Would you really go as far as to beat me to death?”
“I might just do that,” Curran retorted, rolling his eyes dismissively. “Take back what you said, and we can forget this ever happened!”
“I can’t take it back,” Bobby held firm.
“You…” Curran’s eyes widened with fury, his cane raised threateningly again, his intent clear.
This time, Fernanda intervened, grabbing the cane. “Curran, please, don’t blame him,” she interjected gently. “I asked him to say that.”
Curran’s anger melted into confusion, then sorrow, as he sniffed back tears. “So, it’s not that this boy doesn’t want to marry you,” Curran said, realization dawning. “It’s you who doesn’t want to marry him, right?”
“Yes.” Fernanda nodded, confirming it.
“Fernanda…” Bobby murmured, tugging gently at her sleeve, trying to get a word in.
But Fernanda didn’t give him the chance, pressing on firmly, “I’m the one who told Bobby to call off our engagement. It was all my idea. If you’re looking for someone to blame, blame me, not him.” She knew Bobby had stepped up to shield her.

Had she been the one to raise the issue, it might have lowered Curran’s opinion of her. Given Robert’s temperament, it could have even stirred up trouble when they got back home. So, Bobby took the fall, making himself out to be the culprit. He accepted all the blame, painting Fernanda as the victim. This maneuver meant no one could really hold it against her.
While Fernanda appreciated Bobby’s noble intentions, she couldn’t just stand by, especially seeing Curran swinging his cane at him. It was a dilemma that involved them both, and she wouldn’t let Bobby face it alone.
“After spending time with Bobby, I’ve realized we’re just not meant to be lovers,” Fernanda declared, her voice ringing clear and firm throughout the room. “We can be friends, sure, but as a couple? It just doesn’t fit. We’ve thought it through and decided calling off the engagement is the best move for us. We hope you can understand—what’s forced on us doesn’t always align with what we truly want, or bring us happiness.”
Her words struck Curran like a blow, wrenching a sharp ache from his heart.
Fernanda was such a fine girl; why couldn’t she love their boy? Who would now share his passion for evaluating the new paintings? And they hadn’t even made it to the museum yet! He couldn’t bear the thought of dragging those unappreciative fools along again.
