He had now changed his username to Fifteen.
“Nimbus, we made it to the finals!”
“Aren’t we amazing? The finals are on August 14th, and it’s going to be streamed across many platforms. Are you going to watch?”
“I’m the captain of the Invincible Overlords. Please, pay close attention to me if you’re watching!”
“I just need your blessing. If you encourage me, I know I’ll win the championship!”
“It’s been forever since you’ve logged on. I thought you’d forgotten about me…”
Fernanda stared at the screen for a while. After a long pause, she let out a deep sigh.
Her temples throbbed as she massaged them, the weight of the situation beginning to sink in.
Life’s odd twists never ceased to amaze her. Who could have imagined that the chatty gamer on the other end was Kevin—the same Kevin who wouldn’t even spare her a glance at home?
What if Kevin knew his idol was none other than her? The thought made Fernanda cringe. Would he lose his mind? It seemed best to keep this little secret from him.
With a few quick strokes, she typed her response: “Congrats on making it to the finals. Best of luck! I’ll be watching the live stream!” And she truly would be.
Kevin’s reply came almost immediately. “With your support, I feel unstoppable! I’m definitely going to win the championship!” Emojis flooded the screen.
Fernanda found herself at a loss for words.

Kevin’s reply was quick. “Actually, I was just wondering… if I win the championship, could we do a video chat? I’d really like to see what you look like.”
Fernanda froze, unsure how to respond.
