“So, did you see Bobby when you got back?” Fernanda asked.
Wendy responded without hesitation, “No. If you hadn’t mentioned him, I’d have nearly forgotten who he was.”
Wendy wasn’t kidding. The signal at their base had been awful, making even a simple phone call a challenge. Their days were packed with research, writing papers, and collecting data—there was no room for personal connections.
Only after landing did Wendy check her phone. Her WhatsApp was flooded with messages. Bobby’s chat had been on “Do Not Disturb,” so his messages went unnoticed.
When Fernanda mentioned it, Wendy pulled out her phone, found Bobby’s chat, and gasped at the hundreds of unread messages that awaited her.
Bobby was a bit of a chatterbox.
His messages were filled with the most trivial details—an endless recounting of his meals and daily activities. He’d ask Wendy about her own day, over and over. His texts even included descriptions of how the bathwater felt too hot on some days. Wendy couldn’t help but smirk as she scrolled through them.
“How’s everything going on your side?” Wendy asked, lounging on the sofa and turning to Fernanda. “Does the Reed family know about you and Cristian yet?”
“No,” Fernanda replied, shaking her head. “We even bumped into Bobby’s parents the other day. Luckily, they didn’t find out that I’m his girlfriend.”
“So what if they did?” Wendy shrugged, unconcerned. “You and Cristian are both single. What’s wrong with that? Are you worried people will accuse you of moving on from Bobby too soon? Come on, it’s been six months. Time for you to start a new relationship.”
Fernanda nodded thoughtfully. “That’s true, but I still believe in taking things slow. It’s just safer that way—less chance for unnecessary drama.”
“That makes sense,” Wendy agreed, nodding. A sharp smile tugged at the corners of her lips as if recalling something. “Judie can be a real pain. If she has an issue with you, you can bet she’ll stir up trouble. Stay away from that woman—she’s trouble.”
Fernanda was surprised. It was the first time anyone had used such a term to describe Judie. To Fernanda, Judie had always seemed like a woman of grace and elegance, a noblewoman who carried herself with pride. Her perfect family background and seemingly blissful marriage had given her an air of superiority.

“Forget it, gossip isn’t our thing,” Wendy said, dismissing it with a flick of her wrist before changing the topic. “What’s the date today?”
“July 22nd.”
“Oh, so fast.” A hint of realization flashed across Wendy’s eyes. “It’s that day again.”
“What day?”
“It’s my mother’s birthday,” Wendy answered quietly.
“Ah, I see.” Fernanda smiled gently. “Well, you should definitely wish her a happy birthday then.”
