Chapter 838:

Fernanda responded with surprise, “He didn’t speak for six months?”

“Only on the day he left did he finally speak.”

Decades later, Haley still vividly recalled the day they sent Cristian away. It was a bitterly cold winter day, the air filled with falling snow. Ten-year-old Cristian stood alone in the snow, wearing inadequate clothes, his expression stoic. No one else came to bid him farewell, only Haley. She reached out to touch his head, but he recoiled, his disgust evident. She pulled back her hand and gently reassured him. “Cristian, Mr. Bernard will take care of you. Be brave. I’ll come for you when I can.”

Cristian displayed no reaction to her words. His gaze was fixed emotionlessly on the opulent Reed manor that towered before him. After months of silence, he finally uttered his first words: “One day, I will have my revenge on all of them.”

The tone in which he spoke those words was cold and menacing, and they still sent shivers down Haley’s spine whenever she recalled them.

Haley fell silent as she felt Fernanda’s gaze on her. “I’m sorry. It seems I’ve said too much,” she said with an apologetic smile. In that moment, she decided not to tell Fernanda what Cristian had said, not wanting to frighten her.

Haley had been the only one to hear those words from Cristian. No one else in the Reed family knew about it. They were unaware of the deep hatred Cristian had felt toward them when he left the Reed family. Even now, they remained indifferent to his return. Only Haley lived in fear that Cristian would fulfill his promise of revenge. She was even more frightened, as he seemed to have grown more ruthless.

Then she noticed the soft spot Cristian had for Fernanda. A thought started to form in her heart—that maybe Fernanda could change him. Haley wanted him to live a life unclouded by hatred. She didn’t want him to ruin his future by constantly dwelling on the past.

That was why Haley appreciated Fernanda. She didn’t object to their relationship because she believed that very few people could actually reach Cristian.

“What happened next? Where did you send Cristian?” Fernanda asked. She needed to know everything about Cristian, to understand the hardships he had endured during his dark years.

“I sent him to Zhota. It’s a small town—my friend’s hometown. I asked my friend to go with him and take care of him,” Haley explained.

Fernanda was dumbfounded by this revelation.

However, she quickly regained her composure. She remembered the first time she met Cristian. He had taken her to dinner at a restaurant serving Zhota cuisine in Esaham. He had mentioned that he had lived in Zhota for a few years as a child and preferred to think of it as his hometown rather than Esaham.

Haley continued, “My friend and Cristian eventually settled in a small village called Greenwillow in Zhota.”

Suddenly, Fernanda jerked forward in her chair, startling Haley.

“What’s wrong?” Haley asked, confusion clearly evident on her face. Fernanda’s hand tightened around the armrest of her chair, and her throat seemed to tighten.

Greenwillow was where she had once lived with Hiram.
