Fernanda held out her phone. “They’re not at Dawn Villas right now.

Call them yourself. I’ll have someone take you.”

Kevin took it without a word and dialed Michelle’s number.

After a few rings, the call connected. His voice came out rough, strained. From where Fernanda stood, she could hear Michelle’s quiet sobs on the other end.

His grip tightened around the phone. Eyes wide, Kevin turned to Fernanda, as if the ground had just given way beneath him.

Fernanda didn’t need to hear Michelle’s words to know what had been said. She could already picture it—the version of the story where she was the villain.

But it didn’t matter to her. She simply didn’t care.

Fernanda focused on her drink, ignoring his stare.

Kevin sat there, stunned, before finally hanging up.

“You… kicked us out?” His voice was barely above a whisper.

“Yes,” Fernanda said, steady and unapologetic. “It belonged to my mother. So, I cleared everyone out.”

She then stayed silent, but Leon didn’t. “Kid, your parents weren’t just bad—they were cruel. They tried to sell your sister off to some old guy. You’ve seen the news, haven’t you? They’re monsters.”

Kevin went still. His throat tightened, breath shallow, like he was choking on something he couldn’t swallow.

He knew what had happened. That was the worst part. That was why he hadn’t gone home—because he didn’t know how to face his parents.

“And you know what’s worse?” Leon pressed. “Fernanda didn’t just go missing—your parents abandoned her. It was your mom’s idea. They decided she wasn’t really part of the family and threw her away like she was nothing.”

“That’s a lie!” Kevin shouted, his voice cracking. “My parents would never do that!”

He knew they had problems with Fernanda; he had heard the arguments and felt the tension. But he’d always believed there was a line they wouldn’t cross.

His father couldn’t have been so heartless as to abandon his own child, right?

“Believe what you want, but that’s the truth,” Leon sighed. “How else do you think Fernanda disappeared? And if your parents actually cared, why didn’t they start looking for her until the Harpers forced them to?”

Kevin’s world caved in.

The weight of it all pressed down on him, shattering whatever scraps of hope he had been clinging to.
