Chapter 169
Selena didn't struggle in his arms. Her body was limp, drained of will. Only her eyes betrayed her — wide, glassy, leaking silent tears as if they could wash away the years of torment she'd endured.
She wasn't broken. Not quite. But she had been chipped away, piece by piece, until only the shell of the woman she once was remained.
Five years. Five years of walking through life like a shadow. Living like a ghost in her own skin. Each insult, each whisper, each look of disgust from strangers — she took them all. And each time the darkness clawed at her throat, begging her to just give up, she only had to think of one thing. Or rather, one person.
Her daughter.
The only light in the endless night she had been trapped in.
Selena clenched her jaw.
And now here he was. The man who'd started it all. The man who had torn her life apart with one reckless, unforgivable act. The devil who had walked away, leaving her to face the hell alone.
Jaden Rift.
She wanted to scream. To hit him. To curse the heavens for this cruel twist of fate. But there was no strength left. Only silence and tears that kept falling, as if her soul was bleeding.
Jaden looked down at her, eyes filled with something she never thought she'd see in him—remorse. His hands tightened slightly around her, then slowly, deliberately, he set her down, letting her stand.
She wobbled at first, like her legs didn't quite remember how to hold her weight. But she stood. Because no matter how much life had tried to knock her down, Selena always stood.
"I know I have no right to ask this," Jaden said, his voice low, husky, like it was
scraping up from the pit of his chest. "But please... let me make it up to you. To you and... our daughter."
That word. Our.
It was like someone reached into her chest and twisted.
Selena's head jerked toward him, disbelief painted across her face. Her lips trembled.
"You... know?" she whispered, her voice like a broken thing.
"I know everything now," he said, taking a cautious step closer. "Her name is Mia, isn't it?"
Selena's breath caught in her throat.
"Mia," he said the name again like it meant something sacred. "She looks just like you, but... she has my eyes."
She wanted to deny it. Wanted to slap him. Scream at him. But she couldn't. Because in that moment, in the rawness of his voice and the weight of his words, she saw the truth.
He knew.
"I searched for you for five years," he went on. "Every city, every corner, every dead end. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't breathe. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw your face. The night I—” He stopped. Swallowed. "The night I failed you."
"You destroyed me,” Selena said, her voice cracking like glass under strain. "You took my innocence. My dignity. My future."
"I know." His voice was ragged. "And I'll carry that guilt to the grave. But I'm not here
to justify what I did. I'm here to make things right — if you'll let me."
He took another step. She didn't move. Her eyes searched his, looking for the monster she remembered.
Instead, she saw a man broken in his own way. Hardened by regret, haunted by what he'd done. There was no arrogance in his tone. No demand in his presence.
Just a man begging for redemption.
"I don't expect your forgiveness, Selena," he said, his voice softer now. "But please. For Mia's sake. Let me be a father to her. That's all I ask."
Selena's lips parted. Her breath hitched. Mia.
For five years, every time that innocent little girl looked up at her and asked, "Mommy, where's Papa?" — Selena had no answer. Just pain. And shame.
She had tried to be both mother and father. Tried to give Mia everything. But there were things she could never replace. A father's love. A father's presence. A father's protection.
Her mind flashed to the drawings Mia brought home from kindergarten. Stick
figures. One of a smiling little girl. One of her mommy.
And always a question mark where a father should be.
She'd kept those drawings. Every single one.
Jaden must've seen her silence as hesitation. "Please," he said, voice barely above a whisper. “Just a chance. Let me meet her. Be in her life. That's all I'm asking for."
Selena's chest rose and fell in slow, shaking breaths. She turned away, her eyes blinking away the storm of emotion.
He was right about one thing.
Mia needed a father. And whatever hatred she held toward Jaden - that innocent
child didn't deserve to pay for the sins of a man she'd never known.
Finally, Selena spoke, her voice low but firm. "Alright. I'll let you see her."
Jaden exhaled like he'd been holding his breath for years.
"But let me make one thing clear," she said, whipping around to face him. Her eyes were fierce again now, burning like fire behind the tears. "This Chance - it's not for you. It's for her. If you so much as hurt her, ever once will make suou never see her again. Do you understand?"
"I understand,” Jaden nodded solemnly.
"And just because Mia might call you 'Papa'...” she continued, her voice turning cold, "don't assume that means you're my husband. Don't ever cross that line."
Jaden dipped his head slightly, accepting the terms. He knew better than to push. "I'll prove myself," he said. "Even if it takes a lifetime."
Selena said nothing. Her silence was its own sentence.
But something inside her shifted. The burden she had carried alone for so long... it wasn't lighter. Not yet. But maybe, just maybe, she wouldn't have to carry it all yherselfo
anymore.
Jaden saw it too—that flicker of vulnerability she was too proud to show.
He didn't reach for her again. He didn't speak. He simply watched her turn her face
away, shielding the chaos of emotions stirring within her.
