The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 114
Early the next morning, Leilani arrived at Pure-Spring Clinic to open for business.
The clinic was located on a downtown commercial street. The storefront wasn’t large, and the decor was simple and rustic, making it look a bit out of place amidst the surrounding modern shops.
Many passersby cast curious glances, but few actually came in. In most people’s eyes, a clinic specializing in traditional methods should have an old doctor with white hair sitting inside, not a young, beautiful woman like her. Furthermore, Pure-Spring Clinic was newly renovated. It didn’t have the weathered look of an established practice.
Leilani didn’t mind. Her primary income came from taking jobs on the dark web and solving complex medical issues for the wealthy. Each of those commissions brought in a significant sum. The walk-in traffic was just leaving things to fate.
She followed her routine: organizing herbs, checking the cabinets, and glancing at the security monitor.
A tall figure caught her attention. It was a very handsome young man with deep, sculpted features that suggested mixed heritage. He was built like an athlete but dressed in a casual suit. He was pacing back and forth in front of the clinic, looking indecisive. He seemed to be debating whether to enter.
Leilani raised an eyebrow, put down the herbs, and pushed the door open. “Hello. Are you
here to see a doctor?”

Leilani was used to this reaction. She smiled faintly, unbothered. “Traditional holistic medicine is about skill, not age.”
The man hesitated, scratching his head. “A friend recommended this place. Said the methods here were amazing… But honestly, I’m skeptical. Is this stuff for real? It’s not a scam, is it?”
He didn’t sound like a local. His accent and features hinted at a mixed background, and his words made it clear he didn’t put much stock in holistic medicine.
Leilani narrowed her eyes. She stepped aside and made a gesture of invitation. “Since you’re already here, why not come in and let me check your pulse? You’ll know if it’s real or fake soon enough.”

His comments had sparked a rare bit of competitiveness in her. She decided to show him exactly what traditional holistic medicine could do.
The man hesitated for a moment but eventually followed her inside. Once in, his eyes darted around the room. The scent of herbs filled the air, and the decor was elegant. The orderly display and clean environment relaxed him slightly.
“Sit,” Leilani said, pointing to the chair by the consultation desk. She sat opposite him. “What’s your name?”
