The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 143
Mr. Dillon looked at her seriously. “Dr. Cheney, have a thought.”
Leilani looked up.
“I don’t know who you studied under, but if you don’t currently have a mentor… would you consider me?” Mr. Dillon’s gaze was burning, though he expressed his idea in a tactful, joking manner. “I may not be the absolute top doctor, but I promise, if you follow me, I’ll make sure you’re set for life!”
O
Leilani was stunned for a moment, then shook her head. She hadn’t expected Mr. Dillon to bring this up. “I’m sorry, Mr. Dillon. I already have a mentor.”
“Oh?” Mr. Dillon was surprised, but not overly so. Given that Leilani had such brilliant medical skills at such a young age, he wouldn’t have believed she didn’t have guidance. He had just held onto a sliver of hope. “Who is your mentor?”
Mr. Dillon wasn’t ready to give up yet. Who was lucky enough to have such a talented student? If it was someone lesser than him, he wouldn’t accept it.
Leilani’s fingers tightened slightly. Paulina was the “Phantom Doctor” who dominated the dark web. Although she had saved countless desperate outlaws, she had also made countless enemies. Mr. Dillon and Mr. Chilton were clearly from legitimate, upstanding backgrounds, likely connected to the central government. If they knew her lineage, it might expose Paulina… and bring trouble to herself.
“My mentor was just a nameless doctor. She has already passed away.” Leilani lowered her eyes, her tone calm. “And I won’t take anyone else as a mentor.”
She glossed over the topic of Paulina lightly. Fortunately, Mr. Dillon wasn’t the type to pry relentlessly. He stared at her for a few seconds, then sighed in regret.
“So be it. Mentorship depends on fate; it cannot be forced.” He shook his head, his tone remaining gentle. “However, if you ever need help with anything, just ask.”
Leilani nodded. “Thank you, Mr. Dillon.”
Mr. Dillon waved his hand. Before turning to leave, he looked back and instructed her, “By the way, finding the medicine will take some time. Since we have a direction now, get a good sleep tonight. Don’t ruin your health.”
Leilani looked at Mr. Chilton, whose breathing was steady on the bed, and stopped Mr. Dillon. “Mr. Chilton’s condition is controlled for now. I’ll come back when the herbs arrive. I’ve been on this business trip for a week, and have other patients waiting for me for their next stage of treatment. During this time, you just need to protect Mr. Chilton and ensure he doesn’t get poisoned again.”

attacks. Although Mr. Chilton was stable, Leilani decided to remind Mr. Dillon to avoid a repeat of the Arnold incident. Furthermore, Mr. Chilton’s condition was more severe than Arnold’s; another poisoning event would be critical.
Mr. Dillon nodded with a solemn expression. “I understand.”
After Mr. Dillon left, Leilani ate and performed acupuncture on Mr. Chilton one more time. By the time she walked out of the ward, the sky outside was pitch black.
Leilani rubbed her sore shoulders. Everything seemed to be progressing smoothly. Now, it was just a matter of waiting for that key “Moonlight Herb.”
