The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 155
Letty leaned in closer to Leilani, lowering her voice with a conspiring smile. “Ms. Sloan, do you remember my son? I mentioned him to you last time. He’ll be here today. Can I introduce you two later?”
Leilani didn’t know how to respond. Before she could say anything, a booming voice echoed from ahead.
“Ms. Cheney! You finally made it!”
Dante, looking energetic and using a cane more for style than support, strode over. He grabbed Leilani’s hand, beaming from ear to ear.
“You promised to visit me as soon as you got back to the country, but you kept me waiting! Were you trying to avoid an old man?”
Leilani smiled helplessly. “Mr. Langley, I’m here now, aren’t I?”
Dante huffed playfully. “If it weren’t for my eightieth birthday, I bet you would have kept hiding!”
Leilani laughed and presented her gift. “Happy birthday, Mr. Langley. Wishing you health, happiness, and longevity.”
Dante took the gift and handed it to the butler without even looking at it, intent on dragging her toward the main table. “Come! Sit next to me!”
Letty watched the scene, stunned.
