The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 166
The two of them were on completely different wavelengths.
Callahan suddenly raised his hand and pressed it against the wall behind Leilani. His tall figure was like a wall itself, boxing Leilani in for an interrogation.
There was a hint of dangerous warning in his voice. “Even now, you don’t dare to confess? Dr. Cheney, Dr. L… Leilani! Exactly how many identities do you have that I don’t know about?”
At Callahan’s words, Leilani’s pupils constricted slightly. She was shocked. How did Callahan know she was Dr. L?
Her mind raced under Callahan’s scrutinizing gaze. Suddenly, a familiar figure jumped into her mind. That mysterious tycoon from Zamora!
Leilani asked hesitantly. “Are you that mysterious tycoon from Zamora? Was it you who hired me to treat Arnold?”
Otherwise, Leilani truly didn’t know how Callahan could have figured out her identity in dark Web.
Callahan was also surprised by Leilani’s reaction. “You didn’t know the person booking you on the dark web was me?”
Leilani shook her head. Throughout the process of treating Arnold, Callahan himself had never appeared in front of her. How was she supposed to know the mysterious figure behind it was him?
This time, it was Callahan’s turn to be speechless. But soon, he thought of the other major issue regarding Leilani. He rallied, his sharp eyes locking onto hers.
“Then what about Dr. Cheney? You knew early on that I was the one set up to date you, yet you didn’t tell me. Did you want to laugh at me?”
The room was quiet enough to hear their breathing.
Callahan’s breath lingered on Leilani’s cheek, burning hot. She turned her head slightly, her voice a bit tight. “You know everything?”
“Yes.” He withdrew his hand but kept his gaze locked on her. “After you saved me at the airport that day, I started suspecting you might be Dr. L.”
Leilani was surprised. He had been suspicious since then? She thought her disguise was pretty good.
Callahan could see the question in Leilani’s eyes. He explained, “Your disguise was indeed unassailable, but you exposed a fatal flaw. A person’s appearance and voice can change, but small habits are hard to alter in a short time. Also, both you and Dr. L are left-handed.”
“After noticing the coincidences between you and Dr. L, I sent people to investigate your background. Only to find out that not only are you the famous Dr. L of the dark web, but you’re also the Dr. Cheney my grandfather mentioned to me several times. Ms. Sloan, your identities are truly ever-changing.”
The teasing tone in Callahan’s words was too obvious. Leilani glared at him, a bit embarrassed and
angry.
Callahan stared at her. “Don’t you have anything you want to say to me?”

Leilani took a deep breath and finally spoke. “Yes, I am Dr. L, and also Paulina’s apprentice. I took Arnold’s case on the dark web because you offered enough money. I genuinely didn’t know your identity at the time.”
If she had known that the mysterious tycoon was Callahan, she wouldn’t have taken the job at all.
No wonder they had met on the streets of Zamora.
