The Unlucky Turn by Mark Twain 21
After ruining his sister’s life, Leilani actually dared to act so casual and indifferent in front of him? Enraged by her attitude, Milford grabbed her wrist. “You still have the nerve to show your face in front
of me?”
Leilani glanced down at the hand clamping her wrist and said coldly, “Let go.”
“Let go?” Milford sneered. “When you pushed Yvonne down the stairs, did you ever think about letting go? She’s still lying in a sanatorium, yet here you are, strutting around in front of me!”
Leilani looked up, staring directly into his eyes. “Did you see me push her with your own eyes?”
Milford choked. The surveillance footage from that day had malfunctioned. The Sloans all testified that Leilani had pushed her, and the judge had ruled accordingly. Would the Sloan family frame their own flesh and blood? Surely not!
Therefore, Milford naturally assumed Leilani was just making excuses. “If it wasn’t you, why did you go to prison?”
Leilani curled her lips, a trace of mockery flashing in her eyes. The Milford standing before her was just another fool blinded by the Sloan family. She didn’t bother explaining. She shook off his hand and turned to leave.
Milford blocked her path. “Stand still! You haven’t answered my question!”
Leilani hadn’t intended to engage with him, but she thought of Yvonne. She stopped and asked, “Which facility is your sister in?”
Milford looked at her warily. “What are you planning?”
Why was she asking that? Was she planning to hurt Yvonne again?
Leilani ignored his speculation and asked, articulating every word, “I’ll ask one more time. Where is
Yvonne?”
Shaken by her icy gaze, Milford answered instinctively, “…Haven Sanatorium.”
Leilani turned and walked away.
Milford suddenly snapped out of it and grabbed her wrist again. “Where are you going?”
Leilani shook him off and pushed through the door without looking back. Milford chased after her, but at the entrance, he only saw her retreating figure. She looked slender but unyielding, her presence as cold and sharp as steel.
…
Haven Sanatorium was located in the suburbs. The environment was quiet, with white buildings nestled among green trees like an isolated island.
Leilani stood at the door of the ward, looking through the glass window at Yvonne lying on the bed. The girl who used to be lively, cheerful, and generous was now so thin she had lost her shape. Her eyes were closed, and her face was pale to the point of transparency. Her body under the quilt was so frail that it barely made a mound. Only the rhythmic beeping of the heart monitor proved she was

still alive.
Leilani’s fingers tightened slightly, and her breathing grew heavy. She pushed the door open and walked in, her steps light, afraid to disturb the person on the bed.
Yvonne seemed to sense someone approaching. She slowly opened her eyes and looked at Leilani blankly. “Who… are you?”
Her voice was faint and weak.
Leilani’s throat tightened. “Yvonne, it’s me. Leilani.”
“Leilani?” Yvonne murmured the name, frowning slightly as if trying hard to recall something, but soon gave up and shook her head. “I don’t remember… but I feel like you’re very familiar. You look really pretty. I like you.”
She struggled to force a smile for Leilani-a smile that was weak but pure. Leilani felt her eyes sting, and an inexplicable pain rose in her chest.
